Let's see some more. None of mine are beat up enough to even look "not new". :)

Great old thread.

Hi,

I you wanna see some pics on a beat-up Police, go here.

Close-ups and totals of my Gin-1 SE Police.

It's gonna go home to Colorado for reprofiling, though

Well, I don't know if this one really fits the definition of a "beater", but it was my EDC Spydie (Plain Edge Native II) for awhile and was purchased specifically for that purpose. Had I known then what I know now I might have got another one with an FRN handle and kept this guy new in the box. Who would have known that it would turn out to be a pretty limited production? Oh well, no complaints here. It continues to provide reliable service.

Harry, what happened to that D4? Looks like it was ground way down on the top.

Did you give it a point more like the D3 or something? Not much meat left between the hole and the top of the spine.

We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

Yes, I’ll actually call it a “beater” this time, a knife that has more character than any I’ve ever handled. Some of you remember my angry thread regarding a gifted Mini-Manix being used as a screwdriver: http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20282

Well, as my brother is in Switzerland for the next couple of months, I dropped by my parents’ house and stumbled upon my brother’s C101. I’m not surprised he didn’t bring it with him. Thankfully he hasn’t broken the tip again since I filed it to a “salty” point, but the blade edge was rounded and pitted dull, dirt was in the pivot (mind you, this didn’t take away from a sturdy-as-brand-new lockup), rust was on the blade, the G10 is a bit chewed-up from opening beer bottles, and the serrations had a few chipped teeth. Rather than be angry about this, I was and still am rather proud that he’s been using it for what it was intended. Just wish he’d get a sharpener...

My obsessive compulsive side couldn’t help but disassemble the poor thing and give it a good once-over. Flitzed the blade and liners around the pivot, rubbed some of the grime off the PB washers, cleaned off the inside of the scales, Flitzed and cleaned the pocket lint and dirt out of the spacer, and since I couldn’t find any Tri-Flow, lubed the pivot with some transmission fluid. Here’s a “before” picture:
Image
The “after” pictures don’t show enough of a difference to even bother with. I’m going to use my newly built reprofiling tool to bring the edge back to its former glory... soon as I can find the **** thing.

A very wise man once told me "Eat to live; don't live to eat." ...To my knowledge that's the only stupid thing he's ever said.

yeah, it went through a LOT of hand sanding and abrasives abuse, and a complete regrind of both edge and spine. plus it's my sharpening practice knife. just a general beater that i love to death! :D

I've used this SE Salt for lots of "light" use like for cardboard, letters, food prep as well as for gardening.....cutting down overgrown weeds some w/ 2 inch thick stalks and hitting the tip on some pebbles in the soil.....I've sharpened it multiple times....i even "peened" the pivot pin with a hammer ....accounting for a "disfigured" pivot pin in my crappy pix.... :o
Impressive edge retention / ease of sharpening with this H-1 steel!

Real nice Salt 1 pix Brian. Maybe I should get a serrated edge one for work.
Right now I use a Rescue 79mm - great for boxes and such.

thanx Jazz... i actually chipped off one of the 2nd small tooth from the tang of the blade.... must've happened in a gardening escapade....
as others have mentioned, H-1 doesn't hide scratches very well ....
the Rescue 79mm is actually missing from my collection but I love VG10 serrations too .... :o
welcome to the forums! :)

New member here... this is my first post... I just bought a new SS E4 plain for $63 from an online retailer here in the extreme NE Florida to replace a lost endura (great deals... saw his inventory of italian autos in person, niiiice), and I've selectively read about 40 pages deep cuz I just love spydercos!

Thought I'd post my first spyder clipit rescue and my EDC centofante, both well used.

The rescue was put on a stone a few times because I was young and stupid (15 yrs ago). The centofante lost its inlay at one point so I made it a new one out of a rubber floor mat. It was given to me used with the blade reshaped. I really like the shape and size of that centofante.

Think I should send in the rescue for a new serrated edge? Or is it beyond help?

Rob

btw, is it possible to have a sticky explaining all the acronyms used around here? Us newbies have trouble figuring out what you all are talkin' 'bout sometimes with all the acronyms.

Hi Rob,

and welcome to the forum!

Regarding your Rescue, I'd say send it to Golden and give them a chance. I sent in my serrated Police (before/after pics can be seen here), and the results were outstanding.

It really CAN be a problem for a new member here to understand whats meant with all these acronyms. I don't have an (english) site explaining them at hand right now, but I suggest you just post a list in a new thread and we will try to clear things up for you. Perhaps somebody even chimes in and provides a link to a thread/site that already covered that :D

have fun and enjoy your stay

Dennis

**EDIT**: I see you already started a new thread covering the issue, so my suggestion was obsolete :-)

ahh, but it's an excellent suggestion... I should have made a list!

I figured out quite a few of them after a while, but still, some of them had me stumped. Can't remember which ones either, so I should have made a list!

Your refinished Police looks great! I did a lot worse to my rescue than you did to your police... I ended up thinking I should just remove the serrations, then I gave up on it. Was a stupid thing to do, and since it's way worse than yours was, I bet they wont bring it back to the original aggressive teeth. Dont blame 'em either. I prefer plain edges, but one serrated knife I should own. I should just buy a toothy salt and toss the rescue.

Hey, Thanks for your reply! I've only had four spydercos (lost one, ruined one), but of all my knives, I really like the spydercos the best.... I have a feeling I've been bitten by the spyder in more ways than one (hence my forum nick), and I see a few more :spyder: will be added to the collection soon. You know ya got it bad when ya read 40 pages deep on a forum for no particular reason!! :D
