Previously the Police had a superior steel vs. the Endura. Once the Enduras were upgraded to VG-10; the cost difference is rather curious. It is difficult to fathom, but I wonder out loud if the Police will make the next cut when Spyderco drops the low performers (in sales*) to try new models.

*Note, obviously I have no idea of sales, but it is hard to imagine it would sell very well for the reason you brought up.

The Police model is my personal favorite. I have the SS PE version, and it has rarely left my pocket since it's purchase. To me, it is the most aesthetically pleasing model in Spyderco's catalog... and it's size is just about perfect for my hands. I would say that it comes down to a matter of taste, you should go find one to play around with for a bit and see if you don't prefer it to the Endura or Delica. If nothing else, I think you will come to realize that the extra half inch or so of handle changes up the ergos some and the quarter inch of extra blade comes in handy more often than you'd think.

I also don't understand it. The Police has a very sharp tip, and a swedge but I'm not sure why it has a higher price. I would think that an SS Endura would get the job done just as well. Unless you need that absolute "spinter picker" tip that the Police has. ;)

I'd say the Police will need an update soon or it will go too. For me , the grip gets too slippery. I love it otherwise. The other gripped police models are either hoarded as collectors, or plain worn out like mine.

The market has changed to G10, carbon fibre, Ti grips etc. for their advantages. The Police is one of the last hold outs.

The VG10 blade is fine BTW. No need for a super steel upgrade on it. Just a grippier grip IMO.

There again it is probably a slow but steady seller. Do you chance giving that up? Joe

There are probably more true variants to the Police than any other model. (true variant meaning changes other than FRN handle color). Hopefully it has some legs left in it.

Much like Jordan aludes, it has a lot of art in a working model. :)

G-10 Police: One of the Elite

#7

Post by JD Spydo »

The G-10 Police model in my opinion was truly one of the "paramount elite" Classics of the all time Spyder line up. It and the G-10 Harpy were both disappointments on the sales charts at the time of their release. With the upsurge in popularity of G-10 handles it would be interesting to see how they both would fare with a second chance.

The G-10 and Titanium Police models are far and above my favorite variations of this great model. To me handle materials play an important part of a knife's overall functional potential. The G-10 Police is truly one of the most severely overlooked Spyders that was short lived on the line up.

As an owner and user of both SS and G-10 Police models I can say that once you carry a G-10 model you very quickly appreciate its attributes. My EDC is a G-10 flat grind (PE or SE) converted to T/U carry and it is an amazing slicer or SD blade. It also works well in all grips. Solid performer.

The model definitely needs an update, the SS is bordeline useless in a cold or wet environment (not a slam, just the truth) without skate tape or a couple of hours in my metal checkering jig. Jimping on the thumb ramp and maybe a small choil for choking up on the blade would be nice too.

With a revamp (please Sal, make it flat ground and keep it vg-10) it and say,
a dodo in the off hand pocket you are ready for most anything.

Just my $.02 worth, but I have carried one or two of them for quite a while.

Seeing as we are talking about a revamp, I wouldn't mind a few holes for lefty conversion. I think it will be a sad day if the model gets discontinued. Not so much because the model doesn't have its flaws but because when it goes all that remains of the original 9 models from the 80's will be the harpy. And, it is sort of the last of the truly traditionally designed spydies from which 90% of the current models came.

Easy to overlook something that is so rare many folks know it even exists.

You are right though, I'd imagine G-10 would put some fire back into it for the regular knife peeps.

I once read in the achives of the Spyderco forums at BF a comment of Sal concerning this issue.

He stated that the SS Police had a more stringent quality control because it is used by LEO's as well who have to really trust their knive

However all of my SS Polices(3 of them) have blade play as well as my last two SS Endura's 4/SE :(

Boy, I've looked and looked at the Police but have never bought one. It still haunts me a bit. I'm like some of you....a different handle material would be nice. Although I seem to be picking up more SS handles, I don't care for them that much. It seems that many of the knives I want only come in SS now...like

Crickett
Navigator II
Dragonfly (I just don't like the FRN Dragonfly)

If the Police happens along in a different handle, I may be forced to get one.

Plowboy,

I was just like you.

The Police is one of the knives you have to hold in your hand and handle for just a couple of days to be hooked and addicted with no obvious reason.
It happened to me just like this. I got one by chance as a bargain and it started to grow on me the first couple of minutes I held it (in spite of the fact I didn't expect too much out of it in the first place).
I think there's something to this knife that made it stay in the lineup for such a long time that you cant see at the very first glance but after that is VERY persistent :-) Perhaps it is the spirit in this knife that helped Spyderco to be the successful company it is today.

My opinion is, too, that every Spydie addict should get one of them, especially in SE (If he's a fan of serrations or not) just because it is such a fundamental Spyderco model. Again, you have to use one to appreciate it; it will never grow on you just looking at the catalog. Don't know why

Did I just say all of that??

I also would love the G10 handled Police to make a come back, at least in a 'sprint run'. I'd snatch up at least one. I'd owned one for a few months when I was in the Marines back in '97 or so. Wish I'd kept that one!

Some day you might come to realize that the blade play you keep stressing about isn't a consideration of reliable quality in the vast majority of cases.

Why keep unchanged Police, which sales are (IMHO justly) canibalized by SS Endura (same size, same steel, same lock, considerably less expensive)? It has been mentioned many times that demand (atleast among members of various knife forums) for G-10 flat ground Police is quite higher than demand for Police as it is now. Not to mention how nice it would be if ZDP-189 steel was added to the mix (or made as a variant like with Endura and Delica models) :)

Well Zen maybe I just might ;)

It just bothers me and has been bothering from when I was about 10 years old and only carried slip joints(side to side play that is).

However, I've been carrying my Delica 3/SE for 2 weeks non stop now and the knife has some up and down play as well, so may there's hope..... :D

I like a look of Police, but I never bought it for two reasons:
1. 4" and over is illegal to carry in my state
2. i do not care about SS handles

If Spyderco will make Police with G10 handles, most likely I will buy it. If blade will be under 4" I will carry it.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian
