I have a friend in Iraq.

Post by liberty911 »

One of my good friends is doing a tour in Iraq. His wife had only been back from Iraq for about 6 months before he shipped out, so he was kinda bummed.

Before he left he began to really appreciate my Native. He played with it constantly while we were at work. I showed him the web site and he was hooked. His plan was to get the OIF Native when he got in country as his first :spyder: . Unfortunately, there are no :spyder: there.

Anyways, is there a way he can order one while he is there, possibly direct from Spyderco? Or, can the PX order them? If anybody can help he would really appreciate it. I think this would be a small way to make life a little happier while he is there.

I would appreciate any help in this.

I'll chime in here as a servicemember about to re-deploy myself.

First of all, I would like to thank your buddy...the strain that it puts on a family is tremendous. I myself returned in December from overseas to a wife that decided she would rather be with someone else. In fact, I'm currently dealing with 13 divorces in my company alone (in addition to my own). Six months home and now we're all about to go on a 15 month deployment. Children grow up, birthdays are missed, etc.

That being said, the support that servicemembers receives is not only welcomed, but well appreciated. In many cases, just the tiniest things are what keeps you going. On behalf of myself and my soldiers, I thank each and every one of you.

To a soldier, a knife becomes something more than a tool. It becomes an extension. It becomes something you can trust that's always there for you. I proudly carried a native on my first deployment. As I move onto my next deployment, I'm carrying a new native and a military. That OIF Native for your friend is probably the best gift you can give a soldier to let them know you care. (Besides baby wipes...ha ha)

To Sal and the rest of the Spyderco folks...thank you so much for building some of the finest working knives ever made.

To the spyderco forumites...thank you so much for helping me pick out my native and military. Expect to see pics up here real soon of my spydies in action.

Id first like to thank all servicemen. I don't know if I could make the sacrifices that you guys make.
My twin brother is active Airforce and already did a tour in Qatar. His family had trouble like you described Joe. He came back to find out his wife and mother of their two children was unfaithful. He has forgiven her, and they are still together. I don't know how he did it. The only thing I can think of is for the kids. They are both under five.He is slated to leave for Iraq between August and December. Hes told me he wants a SS Endura SE but I haven't gotten around to it. :embarrassed: I really want to have one personally engraved before I send one to him with his name on it and such. Maybe down the spine of the blade like Ive seen a few times.
My older brother is an ex Marine who served in South Africa, Bahrain, and San Diego, and my father is retired Airforce who served in Korea, and Thailand.
I don't know why I never joined, but as of late, Ive been considering the National Guard.
Thank you again to all the service men and women of the US Armed Forces.

Thanks for all the great replies everyone. Deployments can be pretty rough on families. My wife and I have endured 2 so far, but a lot of the people in my shop have not been so lucky.

If he is unable to get to OIF Native, I will probably send him something else. He really like the native so I might just send him one.

Thanks again everyone.
