Is it still a coarse grainned steel or is it more like S30V?

Hey Sal, since we can't have another Lil Temp I'd like to add another vote to the green Paramilitary.

RE: what to do with the remainder of the steel....
I guess I'll vote for the FRN Dragonfly with D2 or even a Foliage Green G10 UKPK or Caly3 with D2.....

I could go for the Para-military version. A green G-10 D-2 Para-military may just be the perfect knife, especially if there was a waved version!

It looks like David is trying to "force" us to make a foliage green G-10 Paramilitary. :p

We were trying to figure out what to do with the rest of the steel.

sal
if the para gets the d2 green g10 treatment that will be great

it is definatly my favorite :spyder: and i was needing a reason to get another this would be it

Foliage green G-10, new steel and same price as the regular Mili? Wow, I can't believe it. The Military is my all time favorite. I'm going to get a couple.

Will the CPM-D2 replace the S30V steel sometime?

Sounds like a very nice new steel - love to cut with D2 already, guess CPM-D2 doesn´t tend to break out as much as D2 with it´s big carbides.

As for the rest of the steel and the green G-10, I vote for putting it in a smaller 3-inch-legal knife like the planed green G-10 Delica 4!

Best wishes
JB
We need locking :spyder: folders, at least a D4, with very small :spyder:holes (no one-hand function, only trademark) for legal carry in Germany!

If I could only keep one of all my knives, it probably would be a D4.

I hate 154cm.
154 cm is a regular stainless there my friend. It is as much of a stainless as S30V. A good 154 cm blade does not chip so you must have had a bad Benchmade experience. If 154 cm is bad then why is still being made by 3 top production knife manufacturers? It is just a 440 c upgrade that has held its own and many people are going back to it because it works. Take care

Still, I'd certainly like to give this steel a try, though the Military is far too large for my preferences. How about a Dragonfly or a Native for the rest of the steel, Sal?
Sir

You had a bad Benchmade experience imho. As mentioned about 154 cm, D2 when heat treated properly is tough as **** and won't chip. I am not wanting to start a steel war here though. Take care!!

Hi Sal,
I would like to add another vote for a CPM-D2 Para, as the Milli is just too big for my every day use.
Thank you,
Marco

Yes, I assume it's related to poor heat treating or grinding and not necessarily representative of the steel in general, though stating that D2 is "tough as **** and won't chip" isn't really accurate unless it's being run at a less than optimal hardness. That being said, I haven't noted any issues with either my D2 knife or my brother's (both Benchmades), which admittedly do not see as much use as my father's knife has. Someday we'll send it in for Benchmade to take a look at, and perhaps after its been completely re-sharpened the chipping problem will be reduced (in much the same was as the chipping of the S30V knives).

The only broken blade I've had was on a Benchmade, and it was on my mini-griptilian in 440. I have no idea how it happened but one day I opened my Grippie, and the tip of the blade was broken off! No, I never used it as a screwdriver, in fact at most all it's ever cut is maybe tape. It just broke off at the very tip and I was able to reshape the tip with my Cutco. I still don't know how or what caused the tip to chip off.

D-2 is really very strong. I once dropped the tip of my BM710 on the ceramic sink top and it just blunted the tip. I thought there was enough force to take offa good quarter of an inch of steel.

Similar thoughts, failing a Lil' Temp (I or II), I'd personally like to see a Mini Manix instead with green G-10, D2 &c. I've been wanting to compare the two based on Wouter's review, and find an excuse to buy another knife in the process, and given my current state, maybe a sprint run will force me to buy one instead of going "well, it'll be there three months from now...". :o *

Great news Sal!
Cant believe how :spyder: continually releases updates and variations of their products.. on top of coming out with new ones.
I too prefer the paramil but will have to get a D2 Millitary once it comes out. Fantastic G-10 colour choice as well...
Keep up the good work!

GarageBoy. To answer your question directly, I don’t know. The grain size will be quite fine when it arrives at Spyderco (see: http://www.crucibleservice.com/products/CPM/index.cfm ).
However after heat treating all bets are off. Part of the heat treating process normally is to re-melt all the carbides and stuff into the iron, which could potentially undo the small grain size you get from Crucible.Though I do expect it to be more like S30V than regular D-2 (in regard to grain size). If Sal or anyone more knowledgeable wants to chime in that would be great.
Personally I expect this steel to perform similarly to BG-42, but not quite as sharp (My BG-42 Mili came sharper than the ZDP Caly 3!).

As for an extra model to be blessed with this stuff I’m with Th232 in that the Lil’ Temperance would be preferable, and the Mini-Manix would be my second choice.
