Help me replace my beloved EDC

#1

Post by Blueboost »

I love this knife and baby it too much for it to be my EDC anymore.

Something similar would be nice. I emailed bob lum today to see what he has. Although I suspect Spyderco common stock is more in my price range.

Is there anything solid and straight forward with a dry carbon fiber handle? I love the (discontinued) dry CF military, but the CF handle only comes in para-military size correct? I'd prefer full size.

I am leaning towards a military in G10 for EDC replacement, maybe partial serated. I assume that is as close to what I like that is readily available. I want a nice, straight forward workhorse with classic lines.

I know this is the only place to find solid suggestions based on my appreciation as a long-time spyderco nut. Lets have it :spyder:

How bout an Endura? I loved mine before I lost it. Used it everyday and wore it out several times. It resharpens great too. Don't know about carbon fiber handles though... you might have to customize anything for that...

Looking for something in the line with more substance. I've had many endura's.

The CF Military is the same size as the G-10 Military. The Military is also half an inch longer than the Lum Tanto folder, so I think that would qualify as a full size knife. ]http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l84/f ... G_2990.jpg[/IMG]

Nope, Spyderco never made a CF Para(that I'm aware of) but they did make CF Militaries. Heck you can even still get one with BG-42 instead of S30V.

Seems like that would be the perfect new EDC for you.

where is my best bet of finding one in BG-42? If you could briefly explain to me why that is preferred over S30V, I would greatly appreciate it.

One reason is availability, around 400 were made of the S30V vs. around 1500 of the BG42.
Here is a good dealer and price:

Im noticing a lot of variances on the CF millie. nested liners, BG, SV GB..

can someone help. Ive been reading for over an hour and i'm not making much sense. What is the absolute best one, and why? If you could also give me 2nd best in the case that the best cannot be purchased any longer.

Thank you in advance for the help!

The best one is the cheapest
What do you mean by best? Rarest? Most expensive? Best Steel? Best steel is very subjective anyway. Or maybe objective, I cant get those straight.

I suggest buying the first one you see at a price you like. As long as you are happy with the price, I guess you will not regret it.

great pic Felly!
Blueboost, I highly recommend the BG42 CF Military as a "surrogate" for your Lum.... can be had for around $150 on the internet streets... ;)

I honestly don't see how you could go wrong with any variation of the Military. I have two G-10s (one CE and one PE) and a PE CF. I love them all and think a fully SE would be cool as well. You can get a new G-10 on E-Gay for $95 so they are very good knives for the money.

A few more suggestions that might be up your alley are the Wegner and the Impala, they are both solid and feel similar to the Lum so you should like them.

Ah, how I wish Spyderco comes with another tanto... (Ed, are you there? After all tanto is an ethnic design as well)

OTOH, I don't think there is such a thing as the best Millie (except for my S30V CF, of course) ;) I am pretty confident you'll be pleased with any Military you'll get (even the older CPM-440V).
