best way to sell.. (Edited - Taz)

#1

Post by spyderking »

I have a question for the experts out here..

What is the best way to sell my collection? I'm not trying to sell it as a set, because it is obviously not complete.. but I've been going through some tough times right now, and I'm re-evaluating my life, and I need to sell these knives, straighten out my credit.. and move forward.

I had a recent break up with my girlfriend of about 4 years. Not a bad breakup.. no yelling and screaming.. no "I hate you's". It's something she had to do for herself.. to really find out who she is, and to be independant both mentally and physically. I need to put my life into perspective and improve who I am as well. Does it hurt.. YES! Of course. I'm torn apart.. hurting, but hoping and knowing in the end it'll be okay.. that we'll be good friends.

I'm young.. about to turn 23.. so I know I have my whole life ahead of me. I still know what I felt for this person was love.. and I will always love her. I loved her.. and still do love her with everything I've got. Even if my love for her isn't returned the same, or at all.

I strayed a bit.. I do apologize. If this needs to be moved I can move it. I just felt it coming and had to let it out.. I didn't think you guys would mind.

I am trying to sell my knives. What do you recommend?? Ebay.. knife forums?? I'm not looking to let them go at ridiculously high prices.. but I need enough so that I can take care of my business.

------ any ideas on what I can do? Thanks

Knifeforums/Bladeforums if you don't want the hassle of Ebay.
I hope everything works out for you. :)

I have been selling-trading for a good while.
If it was me I would run the rare hard to get ones on Ebay, like the Cfs and Guntings.
For the ones that are not as rare or high priced I would get a 25.00 Bladeforums membership and sell them there.

Hang in there Bruh...one day at a time. Your open to new adventures everyday.

Ebay fees would eat up your profit..the other forums would be the best way to go. J.Smith nailed it with putting the rare pieces on Ebay they would bring a good buck.

Sorry about your breakup, we're right about the same age and yeah relationships are rough. I've noticed some uncharacteristically snotty posting on here too lately.

I think ebay is going to be your best bet on the rare stuff, but try and space the auctions out a little so you don't flood the market or have your own items competing against each other for bidders.

Sorry about your breakup, think more than a few of us have been in similar positions at some point in our lives. I doubt anyone would have questioned your motives if you posted this in off-topic as a general question on how best to sell a collection of knives, and not included the laundry list of specific pieces. Some here do take Spyderco's request that there be no selling or trading on the forum seriously. A simple edit to remove that portion of your post would eliminate any questions as to your intent. Would agree with J Smith's advice, and add that good clear photographs and accurate desrciptions is the best way to get good prices and minimal hassles no matter which sales venue you are using.

Yeah I thought so. You have been here long enough to know the rules. You post a title stating,"Selling my collection", then list an admirable laundry list of fine pieces. You have managed to collect several rare ones including 5 Guntings. You are no lost newbie. You know how to buy them, but are somehow at a loss on how to sell? Please. You don't want to pay ebay or bladeforums so you list them here regardless of the rules. I wonder how many email inquiries you have received so far?

It's just as easy to edit.. so what's with the attitude?? I mean.. come on, is it really necessary?? How hard is it to request that I move the topic like the Deacon. I wasn't really thinking clearly when I listed it. I thought because it was Spyderco knives it'd be okay in the general discussion. I should hang for such a grave error. I don't know what I should ask for the knives.. so I listed what I had to get an idea on the prices. I didn't offer them, I haven't replied to any messages, and that's not my intention. Believe it or not, most of the messages weren't even about the knives.. rather, my current situation.

I'm not sure why you're so bitter, angry.. whatever the case is! I'll just take it as you having a bad day and leave it at that. If this is how you are on an every day basis, I'm sorry!!

For everyone else who has been helpful, I thank you!

For the knives that you do decide to take to Ebay that are truly rare, I wouldn't bother with a reserve. Reserves have a way of keeping some bidders away, where an open auction that is started at a low price attracts more open bidding.

Is it possible to start at a given price rather than a reserve? I definately wouldn't want to have an auction left with the possibility of selling for less than I would want to...?

Yes, you can start at a given price of your choosing. There seems to be a pyschology behind it, though. It seems like the auctions that start at a low price generate the most interest and bidders (as Stevie Ray said) and usually go higher than the ones with the greater starting price. But starting it at a higher set price is a safe way to ensure it does not sell for lower than you want (reserve prices do this too.)

It really depends on the interest level in the knife, and the reasonability of the starting or reserve price. If it's a really desirable piece, and the price is not excessive, it will be bid on, and at least you are assured of either getting the bare minimum you'd consider selling the knife for, or not selling it at all. If you set your reserve or opening price close to, at, or above what the most outrageous price a similar knife has sold for, then the auction probably won't see any bids. You might also want to consider putting up some of the more common, inexpensive pieces first, since some buyers will be leery of purchasing an expensive knife from a zero, or very low, feedback seller.

On Ebay I will start with the price that is the very least I would take on it or if it is one I know will bid up I will start lower.
I have never bid on an auction with a reserve price.
