Spyderco knives... you never thought you would score?

Post by The General »

But somehow did?

Go on guys and gals! Whats the story behind those Spyderco knives you never thought you would ever find or be able to buy and yet somehow you managed to get one? :)

My three would be my C16S large Micarta serrated Wayne Goddard, Stars and Stripes Q and a Rainbowfly.

The C16S was bought by me from a local gun store when I was at Bangor university. I really did not appreciate it would be as valued a knife now as I bought it. I thought long and hard at the time and I am so glad I did decide to buy this knife.

The Q was bought at the same shop a few months earlier and again I am so glad I bought this knife!

The Rainbowfly is another story. I can't go into any real detail, but I ordered a set of handles for a Rainbowfly to make a "trainer" and they got confiscated. I was gutted, even more when you consider my friend that sent me the handles was trajically taken from this earth a few months later. Well, I am now the proud owner of a Rainbowfly and it meant more than words to be able to get this knife. I really thought I would never be able to get one! :D

C46P,C46PS,C54BMP,C70PTI,C12CFP,C12P These were all extremely difficult to find but that's normally all the fun. Normally after a couple of days they go into storage if they're not users. So I guess for me it's definetly the chase

I don't have any cool stories like that, the most exciting thing that's happened was buying NGK's Black Yojimbo... I guess my Mariner could be considered something like that, but it was born before i was, so I'm not too sure...

The elusive Black Yojimbo!

I was beginning to think I would never get my hands on one. I found one on two different occasions, and both times it ended poorly.

The first time, I ordered one from an online retailer, that many of us have done business with, and even spoke with the owner before placing my order to make sure he had them in stock. He assured me he had two in stock, so I placed my order. After about three weeks with no word, I finally got an email saying he was sorry for the delay, and would ship it out first thing in the morning. Later that night, I received a second email stating that he was wrong, he only had one black Yo, and he couldn't sell it to me because it was defective! So I waited about four weeks, thinking the whole time I was okay because somewhere one was set aside/ on it's way to me, and then I never got it! However, this retailer did make it up to me by selling me a brand new Para for only $88 and a brand new Karambit for $49! So no qualms there!

The second time, I ordered one from a "not so used" internet retailer. Same story. Called the guy, he assured me he had one, said it would go out within 24 hours, and I placed my order. Two weeks went by and no Yo. I called, sent several email messages, and always got the same answer, "I promise, I put it in the mail myself, it's on the way." Well, after a month, I finally got him on the phone and told him I was going to dispute the charges with my credit card company, and he said he would look into it. The next day he had refunded me and said he accidentally shipped it to another buyer who placed their order around the same time as me!

Anyway, I finally got one with the help of a good friend from out of town who found one at a local shop!

A few for me :)

Gray Caly Jr's - I got into the Spydie game late and found out about them late but asked about a full sized Caly I saw in a showcase. When they took out the box, lo and behold, there was a gray Caly Jr :) Went back the next day and bought a second one.

Meerkats - I ended up with two but lost one and figured there would be no way to get another, but they still had some :)

Canadian Pride - found out about them and stumbled on to one :)

ZDP Jess Horn - Being a sprint run, I figured there would be no way any would make it up here. Dropped by a shop I very rarely go to, and there was one sitting in the case  Asked if they had one NIB and they did

I really like my black yojimbo. Watching them on the bay has been interesting! I saw one sell for a BIN of 140.00 and a few hours later everyone fell asleep and another sold for 83.0:eek:

For me it would be the two Lums I have. My wife got me the green chinese folder for my birthday which happened to be the same day as my first father's day. Funny enough, my brother (griff76 on here) got me the Lum Ti Tanto for the same birthday/father's day. Pretty sweet to get hooked up with the two knives I wanted the most at the same time. I really thought I would never have either of them.

I never thought I'd get a karambit... if not for the cancellation of the szabofly I never would have. But, I figure I allocated a substantial amount of time to silat, I should have a good karambit... and now I do. I sure would like one of those CF Polices though.

Centofante , large ATS34, plain edge. Not only was it a surprise it was very inexpensive. To the dealer, it was just another new spyderco that had sat around for awhile, and needed discounting to move.

There's one dealer that shows up once a year or so at the gunshow that has all kind of old NIB stuff. He's the first guy I always look for. He makes his own old saw ( L6) bladed knives for $30 also.

At first, I thought they were the ugliest looking spydies and I would want to look inside the head of the designer's. But ironically I have now 3 of them, Two in PE and one SE. Was lucky enough to have them all under 70$ each.
