I am considering the purchase of one of these, now that I am the world’s biggest fan of the large Wegner. This knife is fantastic! It’s the only one (Spydie) so far that I can easily “thumb flick” open. I believe that this is related to it’s blade mass, as it has a thick blade that doesn’t narrow very much right out to the tip.
The only problem I’m having with the Wegner is that I can’t seem to bring myself to carry anything else now. I know it’s still very new, buy it does everything so very well I keep comparing all the others to it, and they are struggling. I think that I can truly say that it is THE one I’ve been looking for all along. No kidding.
By the way, for those of you who own a Wegner and a Sharpmaker…to what angle do you sharpen your blade? 30 degrees or 40? Anybody know what the factory edge is? I recall hearing that most Spyderco knives are sharpened to 30 degrees from the factory. The edge this knife has now is unbelieveable, and so I’d really like to maintain it.
Anyway…I have some questions regarding the Jr (model C49). Is the opening hole large enough for easy operation? Does this knife, by virtue of it’s smaller size end up possibly being too thick for it’s width, such that it seems almost “round” in cross section? I’ve run into this with other small, G-10 handled knives. I would choose the plain edge version if I were to buy this knife. I know where I can get one, so I just have to decide whether or not to take the plunge. I’d appreciate any feedback you’d care to give regarding this model.
Wegner Jr. pictures?
Chinook, I have a copy of the images you posted before, when I asked about the size comparison between the Wegner and the Jr. One is your collection of linerlocks, and the other shows your two Wegners. Did you have to shrink that particular image very much to post it here on the forum? If so, I wonder if you email me the original quality/size image. Just something to drool over, you know.
My email address is: pinshooter@canada.com
Are there any others out there who may have a photo of the Jr.? If so, I’d love to see them.
Thanks a lot, Jeff/1911.
Questions about the Wegner Jr. - C49
Thanks for the images Chinook.
I suppose this topic (Wegner) has knid of been beat to death here and on bladeforums of late...anybody have any other comments, particularly regarding the Wegner Junior?
One question I had was this: Does the partially serrated Wegner (Jr. or Sr) use a chisel ground (one side ground) blade, or a double ground?

Jeff,
As I mentioned over at BF, the Wegner Jr. is a great little knife. Although the opening hole is rather small (9mm diameter), I feel it is large enough to accommodate easy openings. I have no problems opening mine and I have rather large hands. Regarding the handle dimensions, my knife handle is approx 10mm thick and 22mm wide, so to answer your question, no, the knife handle does not feel 'round' in the hand. To me it feels a lot like a Delica, since the handles are of similar thickness and width (although of slightly different shapes). Hope this helps. I don't think you'll be dissapointed if you decide to get the Jr.

As far as I know, all Spyderco serrations (Spyderedge) are chisel ground (grind is on one side only). Although the edge starts out as either flat ground (Military) or hollow ground (Wegner)
The Wegner Jr is a fine knife, solid and capable. I think the new Ocelot/Lynx offers a significant advantage tho in the choil that adds a choke-up position on the handle.

Durden,
Thank you for your response. I'm pleased to hear your opinion, it is most helpful. I've decided to buy one alright, and am in the process swinging the deal on it this week.
If it feels somewhat like the Delica, I will love it. The only other concern I had was regarding the size of the opening hole, but you've laid that to rest. If it opens anything like as easily as my large Wegner then it won't need much of a thumb-push anyway. I just can't get over this aspect of the Wegner design, I love it. Thanks again for your help.
Chinook,
I figured that the part serrated blade would be single-side ground for the serrated blade style as it is with other Spydies, but wanted to confirm with an actual owner. What I would like to see sometime is a "combo edge" where the serrated portion is like this (chisel grind) but where they've sharpened the plain edge portion in the traditional double ground fashion. The blade just seems more complete to me this way, although I realize that to do this would increase production cost somewhat, so I understand why it's not normally done. Thank you for your answer.

ps - When the Lynx comes out, I will want one of those too.

Folks,
Well, my Wegner Jr. is on the way! Thanks to all of you who provided advice about this knife and pictures (Thanks Chinook). I truly do think that for a lot of circumstances, this may end up being my favorite EDC. I adore my large Wegner, and if the Jr. handles like it does then I’ll have a slightly more discreet model with the same dynamite feature set. I had a friend buy the knife for me in a neighboring city, and will visit at the end of the month to deliver it. He even paid for it!
