My preferred method of sharpening is to strop and then add a toothy micro bevel with the sharpmaker. I'm concerned that the 420J2 on the Caly Jr. will wear faster than the zdp during stropping and expose more of the zdp. Is this an issue?
Is there any reason to think that stropping won't work well on zdp-189 in general?
Thanks in advance.
Does anyone have any experience stropping zdp-189?
Hammurabi, you are going to have to do A LOT of stropping on the Caly Jr before you ever get anywhere close to the 420J2. It is like 1/4 inch away from the edge of the blade.
I have not stopped ZDP-189 yet, so I can't answer that part of the question.

My ZDP-189 is in Delica 4 form and it strops up nicely on polishing cloth (it's like Bounce, but it fights dullness instead of static cling). If you raise the spine high enough to know it's been raised, you should be sparing the 420J2.

A Strop won't hurt ZDP-189
I strop my ZDP-189 Calypso Jr every time I sharpen it. I have had and used this one of mine for about 18 months now and I haven't seen any undue wear on the 420 J2 laminate. If anything it tends to polish it. However I do have a very high quality, hand made leather strop that is made of very high grade leather.
I don't think stroping would ever be an issue with ZDP-189 or the 420 J2. Now I do one thing a bit differently. I steel my blades after I strop them. ZDP-189 is just good hard working steel period.
Now I wouldn't load the strop with diamond dust or anything of the like. But under normal stropping I would be hard pressed to believe that you would ever encounter a problem. Check out Hand-American for some really good strops
