Didn't buy the Captain, but I've used righty liner locks with lefty-friendly pocket clips. If the idea of a truly left-handed liner lock doesn't bother you (doesn't give you the heeby-jeebies because of liner locks being inherently less stable for twisting cuts especially when compared to the Compression Lock, backlock, or Ball-Bearing Lock), then the right-handed linerlock on a lefty clipped Captain shouldn't bother you.

I hate linerlocks, and I actually liked the Captain. Does that help? ;)

Actually, that's Manix Guy 2. The other Manix Guy is asking:

Why's Manix Guy 2 asking about a non-Manix? What's the matter with him?

Scott's on board with the Captain and that's good news. I still think all liner locks and framelocks memorize Justin Timberlake lyrics and avoid them.

I know some will disagree, but IMO the Captain is one of the best Spyderco's in recent memory. Definitely look into it!

Sorry I was not clear with my post regarding the Captain . I was trying with my feeble mind who is left handed uses a Captain and how the ergos work for them using the the right hand liner lock . Anyone can call me Manix Guy , but I do have both or two , no biggie from a good friend or unknown . Everyone knows how much I like the Manix no secret . Hope this helps .

The Captain is extremely easy to operate left handed, and even more so once you get accumstomed to it. I actually carried it instead of fondling it, so for me to carry it means it's easy to use. I don't like to think when I'm using a knife, creates too many problems when the brain gets in the way :p

I found the Captain easy to open, but very difficult to close, with either hand. The hole was fully exposed from either side, making LH opening a breeze. The liner lock was so well protected from accidental opening that requires a long, thick, thumbnail and a bit of concentration to operate it. I defy anyone to close one with even thin leather driving gloves on.

I agree with Deacon that the Captain is just a bit more difficult to close compared to a lot of other liner locks I have had. But maybe that is the trade-off for making a liner lock that will hold up to demanding use.

However the Captain is a folder seems to do well with the liner lock. So far, so good with what I've done with it.

With the very unique blade design it might have been too costly to make that particular knife with any other blade lock. Just my speculation.

I'm not a huge liner-lock fan most because they are a pain in the arse to disengage compared to other locks. I don't find the Captain any harder than "normal" though and can close it one handed no problem. I'm right handed and don't have enough dexterity or strength in my left hand to manage disengaging the lock at all. It might also just be I don't have enough strength in my index finger (which I use to opperate it with my left) versus my thumb (which I use to opperate liner's with my right).

The Captain has pretty **** hefty liners and I think that's a big factor in making it difficult to close, much like the heavy frame lock on the Volpe.

Yes sir...you should get a Captain. It is one of my favorite :spyder: s. It is not too easy to close, but it's not too hard either. IMHO, it is built very strong and I have great confidence in the Captain. I do, however, like liner locks ... at least on knives from makers that care about doing things right and Spyderco is one of the few that really does it right.

One other issue, I don't have large hands, in fact I take a "small" glove, yet I found the choil on the Captain cramped to the point where I think using it for any length of time would have been very uncomfortable. Never actually used it though, sold it about two hours after receiving it. Anyone else have similar, or different, experiences with the choil?

Nope for me it's just right. I've never had any issues with the Native or Dodo either. Most Spyders seem made to fit my hands, which is wierd as I have long skinny fingers.
