Question on the captain

#1

Post by flyguy »

The shape of the captain intrigues me. I do like it. However, I am not 100% sure that I want a blade without a semi-fine point on it.

I was just wondering... Would it be possible to put a second, smaller blade on it? One that would have a sharp point?

Since the blade already has a spine swedge to "reduce weight", I'm guessing that the idea of an extra blade would make it too heavy? Still, I couldn't help but ask people's opinion.

You'd be better off just carrying a small acute pointed blade in addition to it like a Kiwi or a Ladybug. It's already a heavy and bulky blade, and any after market addition of a smaller blade would just make it even more so. It' a greay knife though, I never have any issues with the lack of a point.

The Concept of the Captain?

#3

Post by JD Spydo »

I'm not too sure what you are trying to communicate with us  . If what you are saying is to try to lobby Spyderco into making the Captain a double bladed knife>> Is that it?

You know that isn't a bad idea. Because Benchmade had a double bladed model known as the 921 Switchback which had a short utility blade like what you are describing. And the Benchmade Switchback is a really neat knife design for all around utility use and designating one blade to do your roughhouse work with.

However I seriously doubt if Spyderco would consider such a project. It would be best just to simply carry a companion knife like maybe a C-38 ZDP Jess Horn along with you Captain. But personally I like your idea if that is indeed your objective but it just wouldn't be profitable enough for the company I'm sure.

The Captain is one of Spyderco's most innovative blades in the last 5 years. If I was to vote on one Spyder being BLADE OF THE YEAR for 2006 I would immediately without any hesitation vote for the C-111 Captain

I don't know if it would be feasibile to put a smaller second blade on the captain. I haven't bought one yet, but it appears that the closed knife would be really bulky in hand and not give much precesion to whatever you need the fine tip for.

I also vote for taking a "companion" knife. It also gives you a reason to buy/carry annother spydie :D

I love my Captain, but like most knives it isn't suitable for all cutting jobs. I usually carry one locking Spyderco and a smaller slipjoint knife. In my pockets today you'll find the knives pictured below (not to scale). I have several blade options at my disposal to handle most tasks.

I think the quickest solution is to drop an SS Kiwi in your watchpocket, as a companion piece to the Captain. The Kiwi has a small, but very useful blade with a wicked point that's not fragile at all.

I just have to say that I don't quite "get" the Capitain. I am intrigued by the blade shape, but I don't see how I would use it.

It looks great, and it feels solid. The action is smooth on the two I have handled at the store.

Would someone describe how you put this blade to use?

I wouldn't mind if someone at Spyderco did listen, but I was just curious what other people thought of the idea. ]

Thank you, and yes - the Benchmade 921 is similar to what I was thinking.
However I seriously doubt if Spyderco would consider such a project.
I agree. Just curious what other people thought of my idea.

Good to hear. The more times I see the Captain, the more I like it.

The front of the blade is for controlled cuts-- I find that it's really terrific for opening packages, since you can cut the tape without worrying about poking through to the other side. The recurved part of the blade is great for stuff like rope or anything that needs to be cut off/down. Another way to use/think about the blade is chisel-part for push cuts, and recurve part for pulling cuts.

The functions are really great, which is why I suggested a smaller "office" version in an earlier post. I'm sure that if you got one, you'll find how versatile the blade is; some even suggest using the Captain for MBC/SD uses.
