Knives on airplanes

#1

Post by Tom Puderbaugh »

Hi gang,

Yesterday my wife (a travel agent) started getting faxes from the major airlines indicating that from this point forward, NO knives or cutting tools of ANY size or length would be permitted on commercial airlines unless they were in checked baggage.

Thought you might like to know this. Looks like things are about to really change.

I heard that on several news reports yesterday as well.
Life as we knew it has changed definately.

Somewhere I heard that they wouldn't even be allowed in checked baggage! This must be false, of course. Anybody know?

This report is of course, false. I just spoke to Air Canada, and there is no problem with knives in checked baggage.

One small note to remember:
Don't forget to remove your Spydercard from your wallet before leaving home. This is one goodie that may be considered consealed if boarding a plane.
It wouldn't be too hard to forget, as it sits so comfortably in there.

I flew from Phoenix to Boston last week. The airline staff said no problem checking my knives. I told them they were in there and they said ... no problem. There were no forms, etc. to fill out as some reports had indicated. Note that the airport restaurants no longer have any knives including plastic. However, there was a plastic knife in my on-flight meal. Go Figure!

It's pretty much been like that in the UK for as long as I can remember. One time coming from London to Belfast on a return trip from Brazil we had machetes etc.. in our checked luggage which was no problem. My friend however had a penknife and another girl had a bow and arrow set (I'm talking a piece of bendy wood and string with a couple of pointy sticks) and they weren't allowed to carry them on. They had to package them seperately and check them through.
To be honest when I first started reading knife forums I was very much surprised at what you lot in the US were allowed to have on your possesion aboard a plane.
I must admit though, it's hateful whenever the decent folk are really restricted in what they can do because of the actions of a few others.

Brian.
