Carring a knife on campus?

Do any of you have a problem the campus police with carring a knife on college grounds? More so than in the surrounding city? I'm a little nervous after the WTC and all.

In California, its illegal, as far as I can tell, to bring a knife on campus. I may be misreading the sections that apply to weapons, and I'm going from memory as to these points. So, don't quote me. However, I've always had a knife at school, and have never been bothered in the slightest. The only "exception" to that has been the firearms courses I've taken through school, as part of the Administration of Justice Dept. There, since I've done all the classes, some people know that I work in a cutlery store, and ask a lot of questions, including,"Can I see your knife? Who makes it? What do these run?" I make sure I bring cool stuff to class, then. As far as I can tell, it's usually not legal to bring a knife to a school campus, but as long as you don't let it be seen easily, I don't think there's much to worry about. I generally have black jeans on, and the knife has a black clip on a black handle. You only see it if I choose to let it be seen, really. Campus Police seem to be considerably more worried about guns on campus...and if I could get a ccw, I surely would have one with me.

Its all fun and games til somebody loses an eye, then its fun annd games you can't see.

Personally, the security on my campus don't even like me running across front square so they'd probably be very upset if they ever saw my Chinook.

I find that the main problem with carry is redirecting the curiosity of fellow students away from the knife.

I have never had a problem carrying on campus. I have been told it would be a good idea to keep my knife locked in my car instead of on my person though... Campus police have seen me at different times with both a BM 710 and BM 800 and not done anything at all. Now when I go visit friends on campus I carry pretty much what I want to and still don't have problems.

as undergraduate i used to carry a gerber gator in a sheath and never had a problem, except for the ribbing like "wow!!!! are you going to gut a hog right here in class?" and i would respond "no i'm going to sharpen my pencil." very dryly. i graduated in 1996 and was in texas. here in connicut no one has ever said any thing but in gradute school your inaction is with s small group of people who know that i cary a knife and barrow it frequently to cut little things like clothing tags or zipp-ties on new exenton cords etc. if i was in the genral student popultion i might run into some problems with "sheeple" or the campus police.

i carry my harpy on me but i dont go flashing it around ussually <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> but if someone askes what it is i just tell them. They see nothing of it really. Mainly because i tell them i have it from boy scouts. R there any eagle scouts on this board other than me?

Do you think that the Delica is the optium campus knife? Or would you suggest somthing else.

The delica would be one of my optimum picks for campus (I carry a calypso) My friend carries his native at school. I'd be inclined to say anything bigger or meaner than a native is off limits for campus carry though.

My excuse - I'm taking an Art class. I <have> to sharpen my pencils with a knife. ;-)

Haven't had any problems yet, but I don't think most people notice (or comment) The ones that do usually have Spydies anyway (or cheap rip-offs *growl*)

Get in good with the campus cops. ;-)

My work takes me onto university and community colleges campuses throughout my city. I always carry knives on me. In fact, I often have the clip fairly obvious since the clip's often silver, but not a single person has ever expressed any indication to me they've even noticed. Well, actually, once someone asked me if it was a beeper or something. I just said yeah.

I've formed the impression over the years that the overwhelming majority of college and university students have no idea about knives in general, and clip knives in particular. Security has never noticed it, but then I must carry plenty of equipment with me, so perhaps sometimes the clip is hidden.

The only knife I over bring out into plain view is my Victorinox Classic, which I use to help me connect my steno machine to my work computer.

Eagle, 1999, although no OA, ran out of time. I just barely made Eagle before my 18th B-day.

As for knife carrying on campus, well I am pretty sure that it is illegal but the campus police don't seem to know that (and I am talking about college here). I went and asked them what the legal limit to carry a knife was and they gave me the legal limit for the State of Texas (which is 5.5 in). Although I am careful and I tend to carry my smaller less expensive knife (Gerber EZ-out) instead of my military. Like many people have already said, I really don't think most campus cops are that interested in knifes, although with the happens of two weeks ago, that could change. Anyway, just my two cents.

Being that I got my undergrad in Mexico and my grad degree in Texas, I never had a problem. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> Many people in Texas carry weapons, and knives can be up to 5 inches long, whereas in IL, I think the limit is 3 inches.

I just started school once more in IL, and I just carry my knives concealed. No one else has to know, as far as I am concerned, and I do worry about having a weapon on me for safety.

Be smart, and don't tell while no one of consequence asks. <img src="tongue.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> Just make sure you don't act or do anything criminal. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Thank you ftkinney, I appreciate that. I have enjoyed your comments on this forum (as well as many others).

I am actually going to school at U of T at Dallas, well sort of, now I am at (on exchange) the U of Alberta for a semester. Anyway, yeah, I have never had any problems with the campus police (well, not there anyway, a long story but at another small junior college I did). I tend to think that attitude and appearance have a lot to do with how the police (especially campus police) deal with you, however sad and discriminatory that may be, I think it is true. I tend to keep a low profile and not do anything stupid that would attract the attention of the campus police so that is likely one reason they have never messed with me. Yeah, no one seems to care about SAK or multi-tools, they don't even think of them as knifes, I flew internationally to Edmonton, Alberta with a Leatherman PST on me and no one even batted an eye. That has obviously changed. Thank you for the welcome.
