How about this knife idea? (SALT content)
How about this knife idea? (SALT content)
Did not want to hijack the other SALT thread idea, but I was thinking about a new knife for the SALT line...
The Caribbean Salt...
The Knife: Use the 70ish mm blade length already in use on the smaller Rescue. And if possible make it a non-locking slip joint (ala UK Pen Knife).
Rationale: As a visitor to this part of the world "Caribbean" you know that often local laws, and in particular local law enforcement or air ports, can be a bit "arbitrary" about laws regarding such things. You also know you really want to steer clear of trouble as a visitor. I think a non-locking, sub- 3 inch sheepsfoot blade, made of H1 would be the perfect travel partner for areas where there is water, but often restrictive, or better yet, unknown knife laws...
So what does anyone else think?
Oh, yea, and let's make it pink! Who can say anything about a pink knife!

I understand your point Dave, let's make it a Warncliff (sp?).David Lowry wrote:I do think it's a good idea.
I however think that there are already too many sheepsfoot bladed FRN Spydies out there. Between the Salts, Rescues, and Assists, there tons.
Considering the thinking behind "the Caribbean", we need a non threatening tip.

Well, if we want to make a "true" Caribbean knife, then a good pirate blade would be in order! How about a nice saber grind?Saint-Just wrote:I understand your point Dave, let's make it a Warncliff (sp?).

Actually, I would be open to the Wharncliff blade....
Given the fact that Wharnie's don't do serrations well (when the get close to the tip), how about a combo edge version?

I like the name and the idea Mark! .....but I'd worry way too much of the slipjoint failing during use in a serious situation....using a knife in marine-like conditions are IMO extreme "driving conditions" ......
The "thumb force" required for me to open up my UKPK is considerable...as well....I'd also worry about the deploying such a knife in a potentially life threatening situation.....which can happen real quickly (e.g. while navigating a boat , etc).....so I have to respectfully disagree....
but bring on the Jerk Chicken!

I respectfully suggest you read again (or for the first time as it may seem) the initial idea behind the project:
NOTHING like "serious situation" or "potentially life threatening situation" there. H1 is only here to face the salty environment on the islands. Slipjoint is to make it legal in a foreign country that may (or not) have laws against locked blades, that you may (or not) be aware of, and save you from arguing with a policeman in a foreign country or loose your knife.
If you're sailing the present salt lines is great, and should address your concerns. The "Caribbean" is a different prospect altogether.

I can see both points... Yes, if you need a folding "dive knife" then I think one of the existing Salt knives will be best. In reality, I think if you bring your own dive knife with your dive equipment, I am not sure you will get hassled much.
The "proposed knife" is more of a common utility cutter. Something you might have on your person at a resort for opening stuff, or general cutting. From what I have heard... these are the things to avoid in some of the areas in question...
1.) Any thing "military" or "tactical" looking. That might rule out colors like black, OD, or tan.
2.) Serrations in some locations are seen as offensive.
3.) Blade length.
4.) Locking blade.
I was leaving Mexico a few years ago, and got hassled about a multi-tool that was being carried in checked baggage. From what I hear, small SAK seem to pass with no problems internationally. I think Spyderco could play on that theme. Small, non-pointy, non-locking (heck maybe even red handled) knife for travel in places, where knife laws change with the whim of the police officer you talk to, and the prisons are not places you want to visit!

Well, cool!!! Put me down for two. I will really be looking forward to this one. And I would suggest the "Caribbean Salt" name. :)sal wrote:Hi Mark,
We do plan to make the 79mm Rescue in H1.
Non-lockers are a special breed and we're still learning the market. Probably be a while before we venture into an H1 non-locker.
