Scolby,
Custom Knives are too rich for my blood. I have many, many Spyderco knives. Most; the majority of them, are nearly flawless and good enough for my simple tastes. I was a collector for awhile. What got this mess of a topic started was that my last three collector pieces were rough. Now when I paid top dollar and then had all three rough knives sitting there next to each other it made me wonder what is going on in Golden. One one knive; the Meerkat, Sal said heads rolled because of the way they were being purveyed. On the SPOT, Sal informs us, production has stopped because of the negative feedback; so he must care about the way we feel about these issues. On the Impala, Sal says he can't figure out how to dress the rough area. Fair enough. Folks get upset when they read negative posts on Spyderco product. If no one ever tells them they have a problem, perhaps it goes un-noticed, or untreated. Sometimes you just can't go on blind faith. Not anymore.
It is apparent that Sal does care and is striving for excellence. He cares about his customer base.
One thing: A collector might sound off-base , and too picky by pointing out flaws, roughness and quirks in Spyderco Knives here on this forum. Consider that if I can see these imperfections. then so can anyone. You'll never get feedback from someone in a store who picks up such a knive at the knife counter, see the roughness, and puts the knive back down and goes on shopping. That is a lost sale. If I speak out and Sal fixes something, then he may reap future sales.
I hear what you say about the Custom Knives being perfect. In a way I have done what you said:
"PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR CRITICISM IS!!!".
I resigned from the Spyderco Colletor's Program. Sal suggested that later-run knives will likely be better. So when I see an interesting model come out, I'll check them out after they have been in production a while. Then if I find a nice one, I'll invest.
Edited so that it hopefully makes more sense .

Spyderco Collector Program
Did anyone else notice that Sal called antichristina christopher. could he be a former employee with an axe to grind? I dont know, but it seems to me their was someone that used to work for spyderco that fits this description. I have talked to the gals at spydee headquarters and everyone was glad when this jerk left. I might be off base here but the person Im thinking of was one of the biggest assholes Ive ever met, and it was a great day for everyone when he left spyderco!
I have been carrying knives since I was about ten yrs. old. The first knife I carried on duty that I would consider a tactical folder was a spyderco endura I got when they first came out. That knife is still going strong. I've carried different brands a few times, but I keep coming back. I honestly believe that spyderco makes the best knives around. I have only had problems with one and it was minor,( a screw fell out of the pocket clip because the threads were stripped). The only other problem is they are hard for the dealers in this town to get. But they are worth the wait. If antichristina has had so many problems with spyderco knives why does she keep buying them? And why is she on this forum?
regarding my comments to collectors:
most of the posts regarding recently released knives have been reasoned and polite. I'm glad people speak their minds, and it's even better that Sal and Co. are responsive to customer feedback. We all have our own criteria when we decide where to put our dollars and attention.
Regarding trolls - it's nice when they are obvious. Easier to know not to waste time with them.

Hi Rico. The problem with the Vesuvius is more in the engineering and existing parts than in QC. Until we can make some changes (not yet figured out), the Vesuvius is on hold. Sorry for the invonvenience. (that was part of the "Heads rolled" problem).
Maybe we'll make up for it with another forum model.

I still own plenty of old Spyderco, but have started buying custom knives because I do have the means. I've noticed the quality to drop somewhat in the Spyderco products. Maybe they are on track to fix it, but until then, I'm not interested in dropping big bucks on a production knife when I can through a few more bills on it and get a handmade knife. Besides, custom designers seem to be what is driving the knife industry...just look at all the other manufactures. Most everyone seems to have a custom maker line-up. It's not always about who does it first, but who it bests.
