I am an avid collector of Spyderco knives and have owned just about every knife you have produced. I am extremely impressed with the design and execution of all the past and present models. I am a tool and die maker and have extensive experience with producing and assembling high precision components. It is my observation that during the assembly sequence there is a great potential for damage to the small screws that are integral to the strength and function of your well designed knives. Here are examples from knives I personally own:
1. I have an S30V carbon fiber Military that has the heads of the Torix fasteners stripped. most probably during assembly they were damaged by worn Torix driver. This makes it very difficult to disassemble the knife as the screw heads are damaged.
2. BG42 carbon fiber Military. I bent the clip accidently. During the removal of the clip one of the clip screws fell out and was obviously overtorqued during assembly. The threads were completely stripped and it appears that the threads on the liner are also damaged. One of the barrel screws is also damaged as it will not tighten, again in this case possible overtightening is a good possibility. In my opinion this is the BEST folder design Spyderco has ever made. Saying this I am disapointed that in this price range I will now have to add an additional cost to return it to Golden for repair work.
3. I have two Delica 4's that have the lower right clip screws stripped. This was discovered as the screws were removed just so you do not think it happened while I was tightening them. I like to satin finish my clips and this was discovered during the removal process.
I am not writing this to complain, but rather to inform you that you have a GREAT product that needs a look at the assembly methods and or liner / screw materials. There are others who have made comments here and other forums in regards to stripped/damaged screws. Prehaps there is a common "thread" here that needs to be addressed. Thank you again for a great product. As in all things none of us as an individual or a corporation can improve without a critical evaluation from others. Please do not take this as a personal attack on Spyderco, you all have my utmost respect and confidence. Thank you for all you have done for the cutlery industry and those who value you product.
