Where can I get a Matriarch?
Where can I get a Matriarch?
Greetings once again from downunder.
Where can a 20 year old, unarmed (per my company's fantastic policies) transit officer pick up a matriarch without having to offer up his first born?
EDIT: Please don't refer me to people wanting exorbitant prices, I simply don't have the money to pay $100+, etc. I don't mind if it's been carried, so long as the tip's in excellent condition and it's still sharp.

Man, I dont know. Getting a Matriarch here in the US for under a hundred alone would be a miracle. I would suggest just going for a civvie because the 'Archs are getting rarer by the second and getting one for that price AND the shipping to AU would easily exceed the price of a Civilian.
S blades are awesome btw :P

Herein lies the main reason for the hunt for the Matriarch; even at a $100+ price, it's affordable compared to the civvie. I'm only pulling 20 hours a week at work (the other 20 on university so I can hopefully end up chasing crooks other than meth head scum one day) and I just can't justify a civvie because of size.
I think that part of the problem is that matriarchs aren't being produced any more, although I'm not sure whether this has jacked the price up or not. Probably has.
Brad, technically it's legal, (or at least it is in NSW), just that the carry laws don't permit SD (and it's a bit hard to say the Civie is for food prep). Here's the info for our import/export laws. Note that some of the stuff doesn't correlate with the state laws, ceramic blades are legal in NSW, for example.
Hey Disko, which state are you in?

You might want to think about the Tasman Salt. Less expensive, a bit smaller, stronger tip, current production, so it's much easier to find, and totally rust proof too! Fact that it's not marketed primarily as a SD tool may also have some advantage if you ever needed to convince the authorities that it was just something you happened to have in your pocket.

Matriarch: Not intended for utility use
AS the one brother said you would be better advised to go for the Civilian. At least there are a few of them to be had. But you aren't even going to get a Civilian for less that $115 in USA dollars. So be resigned to a dent in your wallet either way.
I sort of agree with Deacon ( do I feel an earthquake  ). But he does make a good point about the TASMAN. Or any of the Harpy models would do what you want to do. Plus the tips on the Civilians and Matriarchs both are not designed for utility use as you intend on using it. The factory even sends warnings with both knives about such use. But I can attest that the tip on my G-10 handled Harpy has been through extremely rough use and still maintains.
The Matriarch should only be in a collector case at this point unless you were to be extremely fortunate enough to find a used one. But as high in demand as the Matriarch is getting to be even the used ones are somewhat collectible. TRy the Harpy or the TASMAN. You'll be money ahead and it will be easily replaced.

Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
Add onto my post above after the recent posts: The harpy or tasman would do you very nicely, much smaller and less menacing. Ontop of that, on your civvie size problem, have you ever seen comparison pictures? They are VERY close in size, not much more than a 1/4 inch blade length difference. I am thinking a nice G10 Harpy could be your new best friend, plus it is advetised as a marine/fibrous cutter, not a people cutter. Regardless of what a law SAYS, getting the evilish civvie through could be a toughie. Harpy or Tasman is the best bet, plus they are way cheaper (Tasmans are only like 50 USD nib on the 'bay)
