it sounds to me like benchmade went ahead and used it without permission and only after being contacted by spyderco, and possibly threatened with a legal issue came to some kind of compromise with spyderco to keep things out of court. but this is only my opinion total speculation, I was just curious if anyone else thought this when they read benchmades statement.

Kinda makes you wonder why they aren't disclosing anything besides that they've "reached an agreement". It's good they're telling us what's going on, but this is cutlery, not national security! I want to know if Spyderco's going to get some recognition this time around. If not that, then the Axis lock. :p

Of course, Benchmade didn't live up to their agreement on the AFCK, resulting in anullment of the contract, so I guess we'll see what happens this time. Personally, I'm not ready to forgive them.

So BM made a statement about confidential agreement. I do not trust them, still smells fishy. Some dealers expect this knife in six weeks. It takes time to design, made samples, debug them, start production, make production, bring product to US, ship to distributors, than to dealers. I cannot imagine doing all above in six weeks. Decent people are asking permission first, than use it in design and recognize original idea in the ad.
I will wait to hear from Spyderco.

Nah... you will see this is what has happened...

Benchmade is now using the "vendor" that makes the Bryd knives overseas. This has led to the agreements with Spyderco as a result. The material similarites have already been pointed out. I assume the agreement has always been in place since the begining... And because it is "confidential" that is why we have not heard anything from Spyderco about it, and maybe never will.

At least if I was a betting man, that is where I would put my money!

The two companies have worked together in the past, however I will admit there appears to be some rocky moments also.

There is an agreement, it is confidential... So that means none of us are going to know anymore then is already been said. So it is speculation at best. I say lets put it to bed... and get back to enjoying knives. :)

To be honest, without knowing the terms of the agreement(which we'll never know) we won't know if the agreement is fair to Spyderco.

Sounds like a band-aid statement to keep satisfy the horde of people upset with their use of the hole.

Perhaps I'm just being cynical, and the agreement is a fair one where credit is being given where it's due, and ideas are being shared, but given BMs prior business practices, they seem like a company obsessed with control, and such an agreement would relinquish control. IF there is an agreement, I have my doubts as to the fairness to both parties.

Again, I could be wrong, but this is my opinion, without knowing any of the facts. I don't expect to ever know the details, so I have no choice but to trust what I DO know.

I no longer buy BM products for completely different reasons, and this current issue has not helped redeem BM in my eyes. Trust me, I'd love to forgive them, they have some great knives, but they need to earn my business, and they've done nothing to make me want to give them money.

May be it does.
I bought my last BM in January. Now I have just one left and I was planning to keep it. Now I am planning to sell it and one more as a replacement.
My home will be "BM free environment"
May be it does not matter what do I think or do, but it is matter what WE potential customers think and do. I can be wrong, but I hope I am right.

Oh but it does...you, the consumer, is what drives the market. I made this in a lengthy post on Blade Forums about integrity and respect and how a lack of both can cause consumers to not purchase a product. At the end of the day, it is the hardcore collectors and knife fanatics which drive business after all.

Agreed, this sounds fishy. I'm glad that there's an agreement, but the lack of credit to Spyderco on their webpage, and Kristi not responding to any of the... 5 threads (excluding this one) still makes me wonder about when this agreement was made. Since it's a confidential agreement, I highly doubt that Kristi will be saying much more than BM has already said, so I guess my curiosity will have to be satisfied with BM's statement.

I'd agree with that soley because Spyderco has seemed paticular in the past about other manufactures giving them credit for the Spyderhole in their respective advertisments. However, if Spyderco choses to remain silent on this issue, then all I have is what Benchmade said, and I'll have to take that as the response on this issue.

Think we need to hear something from Spyderco , all of this seems odd at best . I hope there is something good coming from this .. maybe . Personally we may be seeing a company slowly sinking in the West , grasping for new ideas or old to keep afloat , not much innovation from them compared to Spyderco . I will spend my money elsewhere .
