How about the para?

#1

Post by SunTzu »

I unfortianately had to replace my millie after it failed me.. so I needed a replacement. Never one to replace a model with itself I ordered a para. I've read a few reviews and it sounds like a great folder, anyone have any comments on this knife, i.e. long term carry, performance and the lock. Thanks all. :D

The compression lock one of my two favorite knife locks.

The Para is one of the best knives Spyderco has ever made, ergos are great, and it is small enough to keep you out of trouble but large enough to also keep you out of trouble! :)

The Paramilitary is my favorite Spyderco model of all time. I love it. The G10 is kick butt, and the compression lock is sooooo solid.

Very very versitile knife. It may take you a little while to get used to the long handle vs. ths shorter blade, but it's a great knife. I didn't like mine at first but now I love it.

Great knife!!

Ergos are excellent and it is rather heavy duty...it took about 4 months of heavy usage to develop noticable blade play which is pretty good. It is also cake to clean.

Para-dise

I love my Para. But everytime I get a new EDC-type knife, the Para goes into the cabinet for a few days. But 2 or 3 days later, the Para is back in front right....where it belongs.

Can't get away from it. It's my everything knife. Well described above (sorry I'm not crediting the writer for this) "..small enough to keep you out of trouble, big enough to keep you out of trouble...." WELL SAID!!! ;)

Would it be presumptuous to as how the Millie failed you? I don't want to start any riots :p but thought info about a failure would be something to look out for. Sounds like you're asking after buying

The Military was my favorite knife. I simply loved everything on it. But someday I realised that it is too big for EDC. So I searched for something smaller. The Para was my choice, though I didn't like the exposed tang when folded. Now I have it for nearly a week and I've never spent a thought on my Military again. The Para is rock-solid, no bladeplay and easier to carry. It took me a few minutes to get familiar with the Compression Lock, now I can open and close it faster than autos  . The exposed tang is only cosmetic, I do not take notice of it any more. It's a fun knife, the best knife available, IMO. You won't regret :) .

My millies tip broke off while i was doing the lightest garden work imaginable! I was pruning a small tree and the tip just snapped off... no presure or anything, it just popped right off. Needless to say I was more than a little mad, I had this knife for less than a month. Its going back to R&D so they can tell me what wen wrong an fix this so it doesnt happen to anyone else.

Sorry to hear that. Do you know the month and year of manufacture. It’s the two letters on the right side of the barcode label of the box. For example my millie's is HE (08/05).

Hi SunTzu, sorry to hear about your Military. I hope that gets worked out for you.
I have had a Para for a several months now. It instantly went in my pocket when I recieved it. I love the knife. It is light and strong. I like the S30V steel and the compression lock. The new Caly 3 may replace it, because I prefer tip up, but time will tell. The Para has been everything I needed in a knife and then some. Hope you don't mind a few pics here.

Great pics. Especially the top views of the lock and semi-linerless construction. Sure would be nice if the manufacturer or vendors would provide those type of pics.

Just had to chime in about my fave EDC. I picked up a BB para about a month ago, and it hasn't left my RF pocket yet. Love the ergos, the comp lock and the s30V. You don't the authoritative *thwack* you do with the liner on the millie when you crack it open, but the comp lock is soooo smooth - like butter. :)

The blade to handle ratio took some getting used to, but after I gripped it and used it hard, it just seemed right for my medium-sized hands.

I like the handles on the Millie/Para.

My para is coming back from Tom Krien after a sharpening. Need to get PB washers next, as my nytralon ones are getting worn

I am about convinced one of my next Spyderco will be a Para-Military. Only thing stopping me is all the rumors of the Para-Military coming out improved or in a Sprint Run. Any idea what the changes wikll be and when?

Also could someone post a side shot of the Para-Military closed?

Thanks.

My impression of the posts by Sal on the subject are that we should be pleasently surprised if we see an update by Spring.

I see...well not too bad...Thanks for the info!

I'm also excited about the possibility of "Foliage Green" G-10 on the revised version.
