The Scary Factor: Tasman vs. Endura

#1

Post by Nerak »

I finally got my Tasman Salt on Tuesday. I know that the hawkbill blade will probably scare those who do not carry a knife. While comparing the Tasman to my Endura, I wondered which is less scary?

Sorry, I would post pictures, but I don't have a camera to do so. :(

IMO, Endura wins~ Simply because the blade is very long... My opened Endura 4 is about the same length as my forearm... So I only carried my E4 once.

Well that depends on the manner in which you use each knife. Granted it is difficult to use an Endura discretely for most cutting tasks, and a Tasman can be a head-turner by itself, I've found that a finger along the spine of the blade of either type of knife can offer a bit more cutting control and make the blade seem a bit shorter to most sheeple. More a stylistic thing to be adjusted to accomodate the given task, though...

That being said: The Tasman might be a bit less scary to sheeple as less blade spine will be showing with the same finger coverage, and cutting jobs with a hawkbill usually utilize more of the pointed region of the blade anyway. Might post pictures later if the attachment feature is back up to speed (honestly haven't tried it yet... :o )

Hope this helps!

The Tasman is small enough that most people don't notice it, at least around here. No one pays attention when I use it.

Depends on the people...there are some people you can pull out a 18 inch Bowie and they smile and others you can pull a Jester and the shreik. However, I agree with the Salt. A D4 or Para may be a nice medium for you in the future...

NKP seems less scared of PE knives than SE too. my Cricket in SE always draws more attention than a PE delica, UKPK or even a Para.

agreed...serrations make people uneasy as do shiny knives. for some reason, the GDIs dont pay too much attention to black coated knives which is probably why they are popular as many good steels get coated and it doesnt seem to be because of corrosion.

My Tasman turned some heads when I used it on vacation. I think anytime someone sees a hawkbill blade they wounder what you are going to use it for. I was helping someone secure something to a trailer with rope, so I thought I would try my new Tasman, it worked great, but the guy I helped took a few steps back. I say the Tasman has more  factor to it.

It doesn't matter what I use, always get a stare and maybe a stupid a** comment..."don't go postal" or the like. At work, most people have calmed down but you always have the comedians.

Thanks everyone! Before the Tasman arrived, I planned on keeping the Endura on me to use when sheeple types were around. When I got the Tasman and compared them, I thought the Endura would should scare sheeple more than the Tasman. I was trying to be nice, but I'll only carry the Tasman as EDC and deal with the reactions like I always have. The good part is that I rarely have to use a knife in the eyes of other people. Good thing the horses can't tell me "don't go postal." :D
