Training knives

Dear Mr. Janich,

I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on the proper length of a training knife relative to your live blade. I have heard reasonable sounding arguments for training with a shorter, identical, and longer blade.

Thanks

Dear Seismo:

In my opinion, the closer your training blade is to your actual carry blade, the better off you are. Trainers that are substantially longer or shorter than your actual carry blade can give you a false sense of distance and timing. Although the benefits of the training will still shine through, you will not achieve peak potential with your carry knife by training with something markedly different.

If you carry a folder, a matching folding trainer will allow you to integrate all the aspects of carry, draw, deployment, and application into one flow -- just as you will probably be forced to do on the street.

With all that said, occasionally training with a different size or style of knife is a good thing as well because it forces you to adapt to the attributes of the weapon.

As the saying goes, "You will fight the way you train." As such, you should train with the same tools as those with which you will fight.

Thanks for the great question.

Stay safe,
