Do you really need a Salt???
Well, need? Probably not, but I use my Pacific Salt completely different than all other knifes...I wouldn't go swimming with my other knives, I wouldn't leave them in a wet sink or covered in fruit juice and I rarely wash them out under running water without giving some thought to lubrication. My Salt has to suffer through all of that. I may not need it, but it is a luxury that I wouldn't want to miss anymore.
Ok, resurrecting my own thread....
I just spend two FULL days at the beach near Montreal (ok, not very salty water) with a VG-10 Caly Jr. clipped to my bathing suit.
Well, the only problem I have now is tiny grain of sands stuck in the pivot. No rust, but the action, is very hard to get back.
Gee, I even tried dental floss to get the gritty sand out, but not much luck...
Anyway.
I think it is just a Mather of VG-10 being VERY GOOD than anything else, because I wouldn't have put my S30V Mili to such abuse of 2 days lying in there

A rust free knife sounds really good for knives to be worn around the neck or IWB. My Emerson La Griffe hasnt rusted yet even though it's ATS34, maybe the black coating has something to do with it. And my old Standard Economy shows no trace of rust yet, either, despite being 22 years old.
Ever since I had a knife rust on me, bad, years ago, I determined it wouldnt happen again and began coating my knives with Break Free CLP and only buy stainless ones to begin with. But it sounds nice to have a knife where the only thing I have to oil is the pivot screw.

I've stated in another thread I abuse both my VG-10 Delica and H-1 Salt in constant moist and wet conditions in work. Either one will sit in a sweat soaked pocket for hours, be rinsed in water, sanitized, etc. in a shift with no ill effects. I won't even dry them off any more. ****, my Delica has been thru the washer so many times I lost count. Never have I seen rust, or even a hint of it on the VG-10.psimonl wrote:Ok, resurrecting my own thread....

I just picked up an AUS-6 endura PE SS for @30 bucks. although it will not be as corrosion resistant as h-1 (I also carry an atlantic salt but I like a point once in a while) I plan on carrying it everywhere, even in the water. it rusts? so what. it gets sand in it? so what. it was 30 bucks shipped- for a :spyder: and a rock solid one at that. and if it rusts, :) I clean it up. some 1000 grit sandpaper will remove the rust just fine and some mineral oil in the pivot, and it should be good to go. don't get me wrong I LOVE h-1. but my brother carried an aus-6 SS PE delica for a summer working on a whale watch boat, fishing, swimming, etc, and with a little tlc and maintenance it is still a tough little knife. the only thing that won't come off is the bottom paint!

Are you another one of us, Montrealers?!?!? I had planned to go back, but for a while I have been pre-ordering with a very fine lady at another place that has a very similar name :Dseaman wrote:Btw psimon i picked up 2 pacific salts pe at lebaron.

i had a Salt briefly but son in law just HAD to have it so away it went . He is a trencher for Verizon , outside everyday in all types of weather , uses knives very hard , and an all around nice nimcompoop . The knife looks like it has been through **** , but still keeps a great edge and no rust ! I have a Pacific for those nice humid days in Illinois , love , plan on Tasman soon !
[quote="psimonl"]I was wondering...
I've heard a lot of posts about how H-1 changed their lives and how H-1 is THE revolution in the world of knife....
Tell me: Do you see much rust on blades?
I used knife for longer than I can remember and the only rust I've seen are on knives my grand-father tossed away in a tool box more than 40 years ago.
I saw some on a S30V Mili blade, but they went away.
I take basic care of my knives (Wash after use with food, at the end of the day is major outdoor use,...)
So, Do you really need it?

Aloha Knifebro,
YES...considering my environment, the Salt series has been a lifesaver.
I mean, it's the ONLY knife I do NOT have to worry about in terms of the "dreaded rust factor". Indoors or out, the salt air is everywhere here, and sometimes the "vog" (volcanic fog) is pretty bad...however I do not know if that stuff is corrosive.
There were times after a night dive where I would forget my knife clipped to my wetsuit and the next day was always a horrible revelation. Most of the rust would wipe off the ol' AUS8a steel...but sometimes, and on some knives,..oh man.
God bless and do take care

Pleasantly surprised
I was very hesitant to ever use one of my H-1 knives. But after losing my Plain edged Merlin this last spring up in the wetlands where I work I was having a tough time getting a replacement. I scored 2 plain edged Tasmans and I immediately started carrying one of them.
I was pleasantly surprised. I don't seem to have to sharpen it anymore than I did my Merlin with ATS-55 blade steel. It's not as easy to sharpen as I though that it might be. I have been taking the Ultra-fine stone out of my 204 kit and been steeling it a lot in hopes of making the "work hardening" aspects of it help with edge retention.
I am not all that anxious to go back to a PE Merlin. I think I will just keep the extra one I got as a collector piece. The H-1 Tasman is for now a companion carrying knife along side my big Dyad.

As another coastal resident (York, Maine) less than a 10 minute drive from the beach, and with a salt marsh on our property, I can say *YES* i *DO* need the Salt series knives....
during the hot summer months, i tend to perspire heavily, and my sweat seems to be more corrosive than average, heck, i've caused rust spots on a Kershaw Leek SS handle by just *handling* it
the air around home is always rather humid in the summer, and has a higher concentration of salt due to the proximity of the marsh and the beach, and I have a couple fish tanks in my bedroom, so the humidity level there is rather high as well, my S30V Dodos get a faint patina of rust on the spine just by sitting in a storage box
the Salts I don't need to worry about, true workhorses
the only steels that seem to withstand my humid environment are H-1 and VG-10

[quote="Mr Blonde"]I love my Salts! It's the perfect travel knife for me. Friendly looks (rescue yellow) and I can take that same knife with me in a pool or ocean, which is more likely during travel (vacation). And it's not just weeds or finned predators you can encounter at the water or poolside you know. ]
