MBC Update

#1

Post by Michael Janich »

Dear MBC Folk:

It was brought to my attention last week that the Level 2 seminar listing for the 14 July MBC class was accidentally deleted from the "recent news" section of the web site. The class is still a "go" and this error has now been corrected. If you are a Level 1 grad and are interested in that class, please contact SFO to register.

Also, SFO has been experiencing some phone problems. If you have tried to register for an MBC class and were unable to get through, try again at 1-800-828-1925 or 303-279-8613, extension #106. Ask for Patti.

Finally, it looks like I will have an opportunity to design a signature MBC knife for Spyderco. My prototype, tentatively dubbed the Yojimbo ("bodyguard" - as all good Toshiro Mifune fans should know), is undergoing review right now. We'll keep you posted as things develop.

Stay safe,

Thanks Mike, I plan on attending the oct. class. Any news of when there will be a third day included again for the gunting. I will wait very patiently (i'm lying), to see your design. Hope it comes out soon. As soon as you can, please give more info on it.

The name of your knife also sounds like someone trying to get Mr. Keating's attention.

Dear Ronin 203:

The last I heard, we were shooting for Bram to do another dedicated Gunting class in November, possibly in conjunction with a female-only class in which I would teach specialized tactics for smaller knives. The exact dates haven't been confirmed, though, so we're still in the concept stage.

Looking forward to meeting you in October.

For SKS, I'm not sure what you mean by getting Mr. Keating's attention, but I consider him a good friend and greatly respect him as one of the true pioneers in American bladecraft.

If you're not a Samurai film fan, "Yojimbo" is a famous Akira Kurosawa film that starred Toshiro Mifune. Like other Kurosawa films, it became the inspiration for classic Western movies. It's always been a favorite of mine and the concept of a "bodyguard in your pocket" seems pretty cool.

Any hints on the nature of the Yojimbo design? Are there any traditional Japanese elements?

Steve's comment is a play on words: Yojimbo = "Yo! Jimbo!" Though I don't know how James Keating would respond to being called "jimbo."

Dear Carlos:

I think the operative response to the explanation of Steve's play on words is "Doh!" That's what I get for writing posts before my second cup of coffee.

Since we are still early in the process, I can't say too much about the Yojimbo. However, I will offer that it is specifically designed to provide a secure, ergonomic combat grip, a tapered, reinforced butt for use as a yawara, and a blade configuration that promotes deeper, more effective cuts than most conventional designs. If I have my way, it will be tip-up carry, reversible for left and right sides. Also, it will be a compression lock.

That's about it for now.

Stay safe,

Congrats Mike on the Yojimbo..(great movie by the way!)
I can't wait to see the Janich Yojimbo by Spyderco!
Chris has casually talked to me of doing a GUNTING Class and Gail had mentioned some dates the last time I was in Golden.
I have no known-confirmed Gunting training dates in Golden coming up...
I will be teaching 4 day GUNTING seminars @ FLETC in New Mexico..September, November and January( closed to public..Federal Agencies only)
SIG Arms and LFI are setting up a couple of regular 2 day GUNTING seminars.
There is a 2 day seminar I believe in Chino California coming up in August..

Hapy 4th to all of you!!!

Dear Dalia:

Thank you for your interest in the MBC classes. Actually, there is one other person traveling from Canada who requested the same thing. Because he had been planning his trip for quite some time, I agreed to do a special Level 1 class for him on the 13th. I would be happy to allow you and your friend to paticipate in that class as well. In this way, you can complete all three levels in one trip. Please register with Patti at the Spyderco Factory Outlet as soon as possible. I'm not sure what the cost of thr additional day would be, but I will discuss it with her and arrange an appropriate discount for participating in all three days of training.

For other forum folks, since the idea of doing consecutive Levels 1-3 on 13, 14, and 15 July seems to be pretty popular, I'd like to extend the opportunity to all. If you're interested in a full three days of MBC, please respond here or contact me or Patti directly.

Muchas gracias,

I just attended the Level three MBC class. As always, Michael Janich did a terrific job presenting the information. If anyone has an interest in learning how to effectively deploy a knife for self defense, I highly recommend Mr. Janich's program. He breaks the system down to easily understood segments and presents the topics well. I applaud Spyderco as well for supporting this program. You owe it to yourself to check out this program. I'll be waiting for Level Four.

Dear Bill:

Thanks for your kind words. I really appreciate your continued interest in the program and the insight you bring to the classes based on your experiences as a law enforcement officer. We'll keep you posted on scheduling for the Level 4 class and progress on departmental training programs.

Thanks again.

Dear Mike, You may remember me from your Army days back in Hawaii. It's me, Jim Garcia! I have retired, was a DOD cop for a few years and have since moved from Hawaii to Canada where I am working security at the local college. It's good to see your success and I hope you are well. Regards and drop me a line if you find time at surf2canada@hotmail.com. Have a great week and I'm glad to see you have found the "guom tat"!

I am one of the fortunate few that recently attended the MBC Level 3 class. I was very pleased with the class and learned blade techniques using a reverse grip was a logical progression and complimented the MBC level 1 and 2 classes. I wnat to make one suggestion. I will be attending the MBC level 4 class as soon as it is offered. My understanding is that Micheal is working with spyderco on one of his designs (Yojimbo)for a tactical folder. A recommendation I would propose is to have the price of the MBC level 4 class include his tactical design. If it is not ready, you could give the student a choice of a reduced cost or charge the full rate with the understanding the knife will be shipped as soon as it is available. It may be asking to much but I would love to have the knife identified in some way as a graduate of the Micheal Janich Martial Blade Craft Classes. I do have one queation. In looking at the new Frank Centofane Vesuvius knife, it appears to be a very good and strong 3-inch tactical knife. Is the compression lock as strong as it appears and would you agree it is a good choice for a tactical 3-incher
