Favorite Fixed Blade Style?

#1

Post by Halfneck »

Not talking certain makes and models, your favorite fixed blade type/style.

1) Chute Knife - 1st time I saw a Loveless Chute Knife I loved the design. Next one I saw was a Lile Chute knife. Classic blade style that is very useful. Airforce Survival Knife is similar.

2) Green River Skinner - Never skinned anything in my life, I just like the long curved belly on these. Makes me think of Nessmuk Knives and Mountain Men. Mine has only done usual camping duty and smeared some peanut butter.

3) Sgian Dbuh - Maybe it's a genetic thing being a mix of Irish & Scotch/English. I look at these as my ancestors fixed blade EDC's. Hoping to get a custom one made to my specs with a Hot Blued Damascus blade.

Well thats my top 3. Years ago I would of had a Tanto of some sort in there or a Bowie. I also like the Loveless Humpback Skinners, but I just consider them a smaller Green River Skinner.

Hmm...most of the fixed blades I have are general work, so I tend to buy standard blade shapes for use, but if I was buying for the fun of it, I'd prefer either an really upswept Persian style, or a nice Sgian Dubh(Scottish heritage here too)

I have a modified skean dhu from about jan '04, made to my specs by LHK. Might have to get another one done before too long if I can find someone who does em well(found one I like but for $3K).

warncliffe is a close 2nd, followed by a drop point.

I'm partial to double edged daggers like this.

TCO - The Bark River Sandstorm is their version of a Chute Knife.

I like it too :)

I still think that the BOB LUM fixed blade Tanto is about the best overall fixed blade design I have encountered. Not only because it's a Spyderco it is just an overall functional, pragmatic design.
As far as work, hunting, fishing and general all purpose cutting chores I have not topped the fixed blade Temperance. There's a reason I gravitate towards Spyderco>>they're the best. Can't wait for this new camp knife I've been hearing about. Bring it on!!

I'll echo your opinion of chute knives.
But I also enjoy spear, dagger style blades with just a false edge on top. I'm not gutsy enough to use to use a dual bladed knife.

Bark River has a lot of very nice fixed blades.

The one fixed blade I have found comfort in, while on on my wilderness trips, is a large Reeve's Mountianeer.

I don't think I'm too picky,

I like single edged, one piece metal
prefer lanyard grip
with some type of thumb guard.
multiple holes in the blade also are a plus.
