Dear to your HEART

OK I guess you guys/gals are going to think that I am getting overly sentimental but I do really have a couple of Spyders that truly have much more meaning to me than merely cash value. My C-44 big Dyad has become a very trusted friend and something I know I can rely on in a pinch. It's high quality and great design are truly an heirloom of sorts to me but that's icing on the cake and besides the point. Also here of late I have really been using my plain edged Merlin and ZDP-189 Calypso Jr. along side of the Big Dy.

Think about what I am saying for a moment. I think when you have found THEE KNIFE that really fills your needs and really becomes something you don't want to do without>> then wouldn't you say that it is more of a companion than it is a tool? Oh yeah to get right to the crux of the matter it is a tool per se but if you have ever found a knife that you want to carry every day it begins to be a viable part of your daily activities. I got a feeling that many of you know what I am trying to put into words.

Even though I have 4 back up units for my C-44 and back ups fo the other 2 knives I mentioned it would still be devastating if I were to lose one of them. I am sure I would be lamenting it's loss for a significant time period. There's a few of you here that know exactly what I mean.

Having been a cop for 23 years, and carrying/collecting knives for even longer, I have no 1 specific carry knife but I have had a few that I always seem to go back to and depend on;

3 Police models (aluminum, CF & SS)
Titanium Lum tanto PE
CR Tanto NICA Sebenza

However, there are others that I have that I share a history with and have a special place in the collection:

-My first Spyderco for duty use, an original Endura that my wife gave me..
-An engraved tuffram Police given to me by Spyderco and carried during World Cup 94 as part of a Multi Jurisdiction Task Force..
-A stainless Police that I carried when helping deliver a child to a homeless woman living in the back of a van.
- A black-Ti Endura carried during certain tactical unit assignments.
-A Ground Zero Rescue given to me as a gift from Spyderco.

Some bring back good memories and some not so good, but they were with me and I have never felt that I was under equipped with any of them.

Hi JD,
Good topic. I've thinned my collection a bit lately, but the knives that I couldn't see myself without as users:
Daily pocket - some kind of Jester. I use a few FRN models and a red micarta in rotation and am never without one of these little beauties.
Weekend/outdoor- an old large G10 Bob T CE (once it got a few dings, it wasn't so hard to use)
Collection pieces-
-A SE Harpy, carried and used by Sal G
-A new PIG Police model (thanks,Dave!)
-A Cranberry Lum Chinese folder (thanks, Steve!)
-A Blanchard engraved Worker with damascus blade

I could not imagine selling, using or losing any of these. They all have a lot of meaning to me.

Like Swede, the :spyder: s that are most precious to me are precious because of their source, not their value.
  • a PE Rescue, a gift from Sal
  • a PE Mariner, also a gift from Sal
  • the Schemmp Persian from last year's contest.
  • a 75mm Persian, a gift from Ed Schempp
  • a GIN-1 Native, a gift from Daywalker

Those I would neither carry or sell. I may have forgotten a couple others, but aside from those received as gifts, the rest, regardless of price or rarity are replaceable if used and lost or damaged, and hold no emotional attachement if I should want or need to sell them.

The funny thing is that I have only one backup Stretch and no real backup for my Atlantic Salt (in the sense that I would never consider using one of the four with matching CC#s). I think it's because I feel these knives, especially the Stretch, are more likely to be improved than discontinued.

Great topic. Though I only own five :spyder: s, and all but one I acquired in the past year, there is one knife that truly feels like a part of me. It's the one I find myself carrying most of the time, and the only Spydie (so far) that I am considering buying a backup for.

It's my Coco. Kopa. I can picture myself as an old man sitting on a porch whittling with my Kopa, slightly worn but just as effective as the day I bought it.

Of course this may change as my experience with new and different :spyder: s grows, but for now, the Kopa is my precious.

I have 2 Spyders that are extremely special to me: 1. the Special Spin that TazKristi gifted to me. 2. The Forum Adaventura that was also a gift to me. They are extra special!! As I am going througha difficult time right now, they are my constant companions!! The Spin WILL be with me when I am in scrubs. Unfortunately, the Advantura's blade length is longer than Boston's allowable 2.5. Otherwise IT would be with me at all times at work too. These two knives mean more to me than all of the one's I have put together!! :spyder: :spyder: :spyder:

The two :spyder: s' that I will never sell are my forum Adventura (it reminds me that I'm a part of something special, and the good people here), and my CF Millie. It was the first :spyder: my wife bought me for Christmas (Millie). Another one that is dear to me is my green SE Chinese Lum, it's my daughters favorite, and will be hers when she learns responsibility and safety.

My original Remote Release.

I have several Spyderco Knives, but that is probably the last one I would get rid of. I carried it through most of my time in the Army.

Well I don't have near the magnitude of sentimental reasons as most you folks, but I hold my scratched, nicked, but still very sharp G-2 SS Police as most valued...simply due to it being my constant companion for so many years.

The one I've grown most attached too = would be.....Well, I've got two-The Centofante 4 and the Dodo! The Cento4 is such an unassuming and simple knife, but it just works, and that's the reason I have carried it more than all my others. I have actually had to run in the house and trade out for it when I go to carry another, it just feels right.

The Dodo is always with me, there are some tasks that the Dodo is meant for. I really do feel naked without my Dodo, it's like a part of me. I FREAKED out the other night when I misplaced it for all of five minutes :o .

EDITTED- Although I usually carrry only Spyderco, I gotta say that the closest to my heart non-spyder is my CLB Subcom!

If I have a real attachment to any knife, this is the one truly closest to my heart, because it has so much meaning behind it. It was a gift from Chad, who I consider a great friend and man of the WORD! Thank you again Chad!

Besides the collector items (JD Smith, C54 Calypso, ZDP Calypso Jr.), I am quite attached to my gray FRN Goddard and FB Temperance. Fortunately, I have backups for both. I am also becoming rather fond of my Stretch. It's not as visually appealing as the others, but it's practicality and usefulness are winning me over.

My Police model. Given to me by my wife after my crossover academy and carried on duty for many years. After being sent back to Spyderco for a new clip, screws, sharpening etc...it is now retired to the safe. The sentimental value is just too high to carry it anymore.

Nice topic.
All my spydies have a special value to me. Most of them are presents from my friends forumites and I love to take them out of their boxes and fondle them (they hardly see any pocket carry, but you know how they need to be taken out now and then, wiped and lubed, maybe kissed by the 204 once or twice) ;)
There is also a small number of non spydies I'm very fond of: Chad's Biscuit and a Delta Z prototype from Java.

Oh, and of course, the Adventura (almost forgot this one) :p

My Ats-34 PE Millitary means a bit more to me than most of the others.
There are a few reasons for this, but primarily because that was what marked the end of collecting other knives, and starting to collect Spyderco and also because it was with me every day during my 3 years in the Army.
I have it in my pocket today, and it has been there for a quite a few days now.

I've been carrying a Military for so long, "companion" doesn't even sum it up. The Millie has been with me through thick and thin. I've used it in the best of situations, and the worst of circumstances. The Military has become more a part of me than just something that always happens to be with me.
