Spyder bite

Post by UCD Chris »

Somehow my Jester opened in my pocket this morning between my truck and my front door. My thumb found the open and locked blade when I reached in for my keys  and I now have a deep little slice next to my fingernail.
I know my story isn't particularly exciting, but it made me wonder: How did each of you recieve your last spyder bite?

Last fall my friend dropped my Chinook II while splitting the pelvis on a ten point buck. He was so impressed by the knife that I bought him one for his birthday. This was the result of a two inch drop onto his other hand.

Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was pulling a waved Emerson HMMV-k out of my pocket at christmas to show it off to my family. I am not sure how I cut myself but I did. My brother and Dad just laughed!! It wasn't to deep. I have had a few minor cuts since then.

My last serious bite was with my Manix. When it came in I immediatly checked it for bladeplay. In one hand I held the tip between my thumb and indexfinger (edge towards me) in my other hand the handle.......no play with little force, than increased the force to detect some play, than the blade slipped out of my thumb indexfinger grip, than.........holy bloody sh%t......... :o

.......I think you get the picture........
.......for the positive, it was a very clean cut.......and there was no play :D

Now I use the same procedure to check for bladeplay but then with the edge of the knife directing the other way........much safer.

Last time for me was with my Nav II. When closing, the blade snapped in and touched my pinky. Very minor though ;)

Cutting through a Piece of Heavy Rope with the Awsome Adventura and SLLLLLIIIIICCCCE  :( :o . Straight through the Rope, Leather/Kevlar Glove, and my Finger Tip. Pretty good slice, nothing major. But, it did cost me a new Pair of Gloves  . I knew it was sharp...........Didn't think It was that SHARP. Kevlar cut Resistant? I don't think so. Well, not against a well sharpened Spyderco Anyway :D . Lack of Attention on my Part :o . Take Care.

God Bless :)

<img src="http://www.clintblizzard.com/images/kni ... caBite.jpg" alt="Spyder Bite">

This picture was taken a few hours after the fact, so it closed up pretty nicely by that time.

Luckily, this little thing is my worst bite so far. About two hours after getting my Delica 4, I was inspecting it thoroughly (as I do all my new Spydies), turned to my friend, stopped paying attention, and somehow dropped it through the side of my thumb. :o I still don't know how I dropped it. The really lucky part was I was sitting down and it fell into my lap sideways rather than tip-down.

I was using a CE FRN integral clip delica to cut a piece of 1" dockline, and the blade slipped on the electrical tape and into my left thumb, effectively cutting it almost to the bone, thankfully a serration hung up on the fingernail and prevented the removal of my thumb tip. that thumbnail is now almost 1/4" longer than the other :)

Hi Chris,

Sorry about the cut. This is the first I've heard of a Jester opening accidentally. Any idea how it opened?

The rest of those cuts are pretty awful. Sorry. It's hard to make a very sharp edge that won't cut flesh.

I manage to cut myself 2 or 3 times per month. You'd think I'd know better

I've been pretty lucky, the only :spyder: bite I ever received was a pretty minor one from an ATR, but I did it right in front of the Spyderco booth at the NYCKS in '04, so it was quite embarassing. :o

Worst cut ever was about 45 years ago, from an X-Acto. I was cutting something on a board that was perched on my lap and slipped. That was good for a trip to the ER and a dozen stitches.

well that makes me feel better about myself,
my last spydie bite was from my atr, flicking it closed (holding the lockbar out of the way then closing it using inertia)
had my middle finger in the way of the moving blade, thunk F*** drip drip drip
before that was my cricket - ever tried shutting one with your left hand?
just scratched my little finger with it more a spydienibble than a spydiebite
power is nothing without control
