Calypso Jr question
Calypso Jr question
I have been looking at these since I came to the forums because most people talk about them as their favorite folder. I know there has been a couple different models with different steels and prices. I was looking to purchase the Spyderco C52PGY Calypso Junior Grey FRN Handle Plain, and I have only found like 1 site with them still availible for just under $50 shipped. Is it just me or is this a **** of a deal? Also would you recommend that I hold out for a different model?

The reason that you are finding the Gray model so reasonably priced is probably because of all of the hoopla over the Burgundy model with ZDP-189 blade steel. That is the one everyone is trying to get at the moment. IF you can get one of the Gray ones for around $50 I would say to jump on it. I am surprised you can still get one that cheap from a vendor/dealer. VG-10 is the blade steel they use in the Gray model but it is very good steel. Not as good as ZDP=189 but still much better than a lot of the knives out there. Go for it.

It is a reasonable price to pay for one. At one point they could be had for just under $45 shipped, but they are not as easy to find now as they once were, so some increase is price is to be expected. The Calypso Jr is a great little knife, but for some reason the blades on all versions except the all stainless one have a reputation for being warped more freqently than any other model I am aware of. Generally this is just a cosmetic issue, not a functional one, but if it is something that you feel would bother you, and you are ordering one, it might be a good idea to phone your order in, and ask the seller to check the blade prior to shipment.

Thanks for the link, and no, I've never heard of the site myself. It seems to have some other good finds besides the Caly. I saw a Black PE Lum tanto and an SE JD Smith. Both of those were out of my budget, but I may pick up a Meerkat...Anyway, to stay on topic, the Calypso Jr. is the most ergonomic :spyder: I own, and would make a great EDC in (most) any blade steel, and $50 seems pretty reasonable.ToAsTy wrote:http://www.mynewknife.com/ProductDetail ... ailID=2370 what do you guys think? the Delica 4 and the Caly Jr. The Caly is an awesome knife. for one thing, it's unbelievably light and thin; you forget you have it in your pocket half the time. it opens and closes easily and quickly with one hand. it's ergos are awesome, it fits perfectly in your hand and just stays there. the FRN has a fish scale pattern that is super grippy and comfy. it's also small enough to not intimidate non-knife-people if you should have to use it around them. some people don't like that it can only be carried tip-down, and others prefer the barrel bolt clip like on the Delica, Native and Endura etc. over the three screw clip on the Calypso. i like the caly alot and that's an awesome price. i'm actually going to order another one; in gray to go with my black one. :D
The FRN VG-10 SE Harpy on that site is interesting.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.
These are great little knives. I personally feel the CJ is one of the best designed knives Spyderco ever came out with. And that goes for both the larger one and the smaller one. I usually change mine to tip up carry as soon as I get them but other than that they are perfection for me.
The CJ Jr. is one of the smallest knives I can hold comfortablely with my big hands. Just a super design having the choil in it the way it does for moving your hand up to control precisely where you want the tip and the blade to cut. They are great whittlers and precision work is a snap with them. The flat ground blade is very well suited for a great many tasks and the light weight and smaller size make it a very easy to carry sheeple friendly choice for an EDC.
If you can find one grab it they are well worth the price. There is nothing at all wrong with VG10 steel. VG10 has both cobalt and vanadium in it and it is relatively high in carbon and that can only equate to a great edge keeper and supreme cutter. I have always been very satisfied with the biting edge I can get and keep on my VG10 blades.

ToAsTy,
also if you are interested in SE models john f jensen still has the ss and black frn ones. I too agree that these are fine blades for everyday use. My son used one of my black ones to work on his woodcarving merit badge. I haven't been able to get it factory sharp yet  I need to practice my sharpmaker skills more.
If you had any Q's I know where some PE's would be :D
Good luck in your quest.

It's been about three weeks now, and I have not heard back from this retailer.ToAsTy wrote:http://www.mynewknife.com/ProductDetail ... ailID=2370 what do you guys think? Ive never seen this site before...
Their web site does not recongnize numeric characters entered, the phone is not picked up and emails are not replied to. It's not a place to blame anyone here, so if more appropriate close or move to "Off-Topic".
