Custom makers licensed for the round hole?

#1

Post by jonshoup »

I've got a picture in my head of the perfect knife and it centers around the spydie hole (It's close to the Para-military but combo-edge). Sal doesn't make it yet so I guess I'm goin custom. I know Pat and Wes Crawford have permission but I was wondering who else could I check out? (after I save the cash). Thanks for any help you can give.

IIRC, Jen Anson, and AT Barr have permission. You might try a forum search for it, but I would imagine that would prove quite time consuming.
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.

There was a thread here recently which discussed several custom makers who were licensed. I'll see if I can dig it up.

As have been mentioned, the Crawfords, Jens Anso, and AT Barr are all licensed users. So are Bob Lum and Kevin Wilkens. Know there are others as well. There was a list posted a while back, and don't think even it was complete. If you have not thought of it already, do consider that in addition to the round hole, the ParaMilitary uses the compression lock, which Spyderco may not be licensing to custom makers. Frame locks and liner locks are easy, everyone who builds folders does them.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to begin my search and continue my savings. I'm looking for something like an Emerson CQC7a but with either a lock back or frame lock and the round hole. Nothing fancy, it's pure utility. As I said above, if Spyderco made their para-millie in 1/2 serrated it would come pretty darn close to filling the bill.

If I'm looking at the right Emerson pictures, the CE version of the new C101 80mm Manix seems to come pretty close to what you're looking for. For that matter, if you find the 80mm a tad too small and the regular one a tad too long, the C95 could probably be "trimmed" a bit at the back end as there is a fair bit of "overhang" beyond the point of the blade when it is closed. Am thinking one could bring the closed length down almost to that of the C101, but still have the exta half inch of blade the C95 offers.

Can tell you that finding a custom maker willing to make a lock back is not easy.

Tell me about it. I've tried. All of them seem to prefer linerlocks or framelocks.
