Clipless Carry - Who dares ?

Post by Nemo3000 »

Hello,

I remember our dear friend The Deacon going clipless on his favorite folders.

The Slipjoint Chaparral is a good candidate for that.

I used to carry all my folders clipless when I first got into Spyderco, including Military folders and C95's. Most of them I'd stick in my back pocket between my wallet and the edge of my pocket.

These days the only one I keep clipless is the spin. It vanishes due to how thin it is.

Just a generic belt pouch where I also keep a flashlight, spare batteries, and other useful items.

I've never carried any Spyderco clipless, except for Ladybugs, which have no clips.

I even keep the clips on lightweight knives that I choose to carry down in pocket instead of clipped. Because the clip provides purchase for my fingers when one-hand opening. Otherwise, one-hand opening feels awkward for me.

Like Jim I do carry Spydies unclipped sometimes but never clipless.

Actually when in the outdoors, for the most part the Spyderco I carry sits (logically unclipped) in a small, easy accessible front pouch of my pack or inside a closed, zippered pocket.
This is mainly cause I actually have lost Spydies clipped to the pocket when moving around outdoors (and yes, these days I often bend the clip a bit so that the tension gets harder).
(When I am wearing no pack and don´t have zippered pockets, it´s mostly iwb).

My main "mountain" folders are Salt and Pac Salt, but even on those I still keep the clip attached for when I like to carry them clipped to the pocket in camp or in my more "urban" life.
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

I go clipless on everything. They always tend to find something to snag for me.

I had enough after my Crucarta Pm2 caught a seatbelt one day and ended up on the ground opened up.

Lefty?

I run into that problem too. Some of it is the large duckbill on the end of the Spyderco (and other's) clips that maybe is a tad more tall than it needs to be.

I just got a LynchNW clip for one of my PM2s and running into the same thing, so I'm sort of thinking that clip modification might just be a 'to taste' sort of thing to adjust.

So far just the Manbug. I'm not brave like some people in here though. Currently trying to figure out the best way to mill 2 slots around the lanyard hole so I can attach a wire clip.

I'm actually right handed, my cell phone has always dominated my right pocket and I hate having multiple things in one pocket, so I would always carry a knife in my left pocket.

Now I keep my knives in the cell phone or tool pocket, whatever you wanna call it, on the right pant leg.

Those Lynch clips are titanium right? I would imagine having a more rigid material snag would be a lot worse than the standard clips.

I also took off the clips of my all three Chaps, the fluted CF S90V Native 5, the fluted Ti Native 5 and the S110V Millie with custom scales. Also from my Sage 2 with custom scales, just the other day. More secure to carry these in the bottom of the pockets. Clipless handles are also more ergonomical to use and are more comfortable to carry. The more I EDC a knife, the more likely it is that I will remove the clip eventually.

I took the clip off the Pattadese and it made a major difference. The rear corner of the clip was felt very pronounced in relation to the handle itself but once I took it off, it was a night and day difference.

I don’t remove the clips, but I regularly carry my pocketknife unclipped in my pocket. I like to keep the clip on so there’s a little more leverage or grip while opening one handed. I only do this with lockbacks and slip joints unless the knife is in a slip. Usually this is a Native 5, Delica, Dragonfly, lil Native MBL, or UKPK. If I’m carrying around a compression lock, it gets clipped for sure.

I did the same. Pattada too. They have a bulged cross section that doesn't play well with clips. (I did find that both are better with some of Ripp's clips, though.)
