New to diamond strop grits

#1

Post by Iole »

I ordered a leather strop with some diamond pastes. The kit includes,1,000, 3,000, 6,000, 10,000, 14,000, and 60,000 grits.
I am new to these diamond methods. Which grit should I use for 15V type tool steels on the strop?

Diamonds work fine on any steel including 15V, so the grit you use really just depends on what finish you prefer. I don't tend to use super refined edges, so I can't really advise much in those grit ranges. You might have to experiment a little to find what you like, although with 15V's wear resistance you may not have cause to resharpen very often depending on your use.

I rarely ever strop past 6 microns.... or sharpen past 600 grit.... sometimes 1200 grit. I'm not a shiny, polished edge fan. I like my edges toothy. I find 6 microns to be a good all the time maintenance stroping compound.

I use 6 micron diamond paste on my strop, works on everything just fine for touchups.

I concur. The finer grits will come in handy once Spyderco releases the new Straight Razor.
