Caribbean SE discontinued ?

#1

Post by 8th_Note »

Looking at the new 2026 product guide, it appears that the Caribbean is now only available in PE (both leaf and sheepsfoot).

I think that is a shame, as the Caribbean SE is an amazing slicer. The serrations on the Caribbean are both shorter and shallower than on most other SE knives. This makes for a serrated edge that glides through material and does not snag at all. It is an absolute beast of a slicer, even with the rather thick 3.5mm blade stock.

I know that PE knives generally sell better than SE. And Spyderco offers A LOT of different models and configurations and it's not sustainable to keep making knives that don't sell. But the Caribbean SE is a very special knife and it is the knife that really opened my eyes to the performance possibilities of SE (along with the stickied thread by @Evil D). I really hate to see this model go.

Here is a picture that highlights the difference in the serrations on a Delica 4 SE and a Caribbean Sheepsfoot SE

I heard chatter about this on Reddit when someone reported getting one in their Seconds Mystery Box. If that is the case (and not doubting you), but wouldn't that have been announced in the '2026 discontinued' thread, or is that only for when an entire model series goes away?

I believe it was discontinued last year or maybe even a couple years ago.

Seems I remember this happening a few years ago. And you're right, the SE versions are tremendous slicers, probably the best I own (I don't have the Chaparral SE).

I have all four versions, and my favorite is the sheepfoot SE.

As others have pointed out the serrated edge variant of both Caribbeans has been discontinued since 2023.

As stated its sadly discontinued. The Caribbean is the much better pm2, but Spyderco seems steadfast in handcuffing it as a Salt only model. I think most people see the price tag and think it's too much for lc200n.

If youre a fan of those serrations and ergonomics OP don't hesitate to pick up a Lil Temp 3 LW next MAP sale. The Tempance CruWear sprint also has the same slicey serrations and is well worth the money.

I have both the Caribbean SE (leaf) and Lil' Temp 3 SE. I really like the Caribbean and am very glad I was able to get an SE before they disappeared completely. But, I usually grab the Lil' Temp for breaking down cardboard. Of course, if I'm near water, it will be a Salt instead. It's wonderful to have so many options.

This may be a good consolation prize. The serrations seem shallower than the similarly sized Military 2. I don't have a Caribbean to compare to, but I would say this is pretty dang close. I've handled a Caribbean many times and it was wonderful in the hand. This may be slightly slimmer in the pocket.

I was probably the biggest Caribbean fan but I prefer the Bodacious in every way. When the Caribbean was my favorite design, I said there were things I would change if I had the ability to, and the Bodacious changes those things almost like Sal had asked me for input on design changes. Maybe the one debatable detail for me is the difference between how the serrations are ground, but I don't dislike how Golden are doing them.

David, what are your thoughts on this? Could someone take a used Spyderco Caribbean blade and inner mechanism and replace the G10 handle with FRN?

I am not David, but this sounds super unlikely... one would actually have to design fitting FRN scales, make MOLDS for those and have all the technology and tools and skills to produce the scales.. among other difficulties this would be incredibly expensive and complex for an individual (FRN molds apparently are quite an investment even for a company like Spyderco).
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

You don't have to mold FRN, you can just buy a bar of it and machine it. But would be a "silly" thing to do, about as "silly" as the question.

Still interesting to me and I learned something, thanks!

For whatever reason I thought in order to make proper FRN handles one would need an actual mold (which would make it even more "silly" for an individual)

Don´t want to go off topic too far, but so the advantage of FRN for a company is that one has the OPTION to produce handle scales using molds and so make the process cheaper as soon as the molds have amortized themselves and more efficient...

As others have said, anything is possible, but at what cost and how much effort and is the end result really worth it?
