"Nitpicking" movies/tv shows
Yes, I am aware fictional and even based on true story dramas are mostly meant to entertain. But there is a whole level of people who love to "nit pick" these performances.
Here are some examples:
Star Trek.
If the Federation has matter teleporters that can.break a person to the subatomic and atomic level and rebuild them, why do people age and get sick? Why not walk into a Transporter and reset your age? Why not walk into the Transporter and have it remove any disease?
Trekkies say it is because Federation culture opposes such things and because transporter errors would endanger the person.
Star Wars. According to George LucasFilm canon, the Star Wars Galaxy basic society has been around with Droids, Blasters, Hyper Drive, etc for 20,000 to 100,000 years. How come they do not advance to much higher technology levels?
Star Trek Earth went from Pre Warp and firearms to Warp drive, phasers, replicators, and transporters in 300 years, from 2060s to 2360s.
Soap Operas:
"Soap opera nitpicks often focus on common tropes like rapidly aging kids, unrealistic scenarios (amnesia, sudden wealth/poverty, evil twins), continuity errors (same actor plays different roles, old photos changing), plot holes, and repetitive storylines, alongside critiques of acting, pacing, and the "soap opera effect" (high frame rate look). "
A Team.
In the 1980s A Team tv series the main characters and their opponents are shooting thousands of rounds of high velocity and even fully automatic firearms at each other, yet, you hardly see the main characters get serious injury. Did they borrow some Force Field Belts from Star Trek? :)
Star Trek again.
Why are StarFleet uniforms so flimsy? Both The Original Series with James Kirk and crew and The Next Generation with Picard and crew seemed to wear uniform shirts and pants that tore easily.
If they have 23rd and 24th century nano fibers why not make rip tear proof uniforms?
I like the Feature Film uniforms and Deep Space Nine ones more.

Re: "Nitpicking" movies/tv shows
I don't worry about stuff like that, but it is fun noticing obvious mistakes in movies.
In the movie Adventures of Wilderness Family 3, the dad has a Buck 110 on his belt. Most of the movie it's around 2-3 o clock on the right side of his belt, but around the bear attack scene it switches to his left side for a minute or two.

My favorite is hearing the sound of the spent brass hit the ground after being fired from a revolver

I prefer books where authors who should know better write about Glocks and modern revolvers with (manual) safeties.

My favorite cringe gripes are cars with more gears than a Scania 144 and motorcycles with totally wrong sound (four strokes with two stroke sound) Also tyre screech on grass and gravel is right up there

I guess one glaring nitpick that comes to my mind is the seemingly endless rounds of ammunition that are fired from pistols before they need to be reloaded, in the old late '80s / early '90s Hong Kong gangster movies directed by John Woo.

These last three have me chuckling.
How about bullets that make obnoxious white sparks when they hit things, just so you can see how close our hero was to getting hit.

Re: "Nitpicking" movies/tv shows
I don’t nitpick, but I prefer movies that strive to be realistic. Sadly many modern movies don’t even try.
OK, switching to nitpick mode; as it’s Christmas it would be a big oversight to not mention Die Hard 2, where the first villain to be killed is referenced to have carried a German Glock 7, made of porcelain, that’s undetectable by metal detectors

Those are Taurus revolvers.
The sound is the sights and ejection rod flying off and hitting the ground.
Re: "Nitpicking" movies/tv shows
I really don't nitpick TV shows and movies because it's entertainment in the end.
Other than anything WOKE, I turn that garbage off and NEVER watch it again.
I remind people that normal TV shows are not documentaries.
The older comedies are satire, I remind people of that too, they are not to be taken seriously.
I think a lot of people take themselves way to seriously.
I look at it all like I do armchair quarterbacks.
They are wannabies that will never be.

The unsheathing of knives/swords always drives me a bit crazy. It's a bit too much in most cases. Particularly when it's a fixed blade and they make it sound like it's some samurai sword being unsheathed.

I own four SS Spyderco Police models, and I never get that “shiing!” sound when opening any of them.

Re: "Nitpicking" movies/tv shows
Very good point.
One thing I did like: There is a cool series called Timeless that I would love for you, Jim, sal, Kristi, Doc, Naperville, Wartstein, Mushroom, and others here to watch if you can. It is about a covert govrrnment and private industry Time Travel situation where the main cast has to prevent time machines from being misused to change history.
They have alot of gun and some knife scenes.
I saw the Cold Steel Counter Point 1 folder in an episode and other knives.
You can see it on Tubi I think.
Timeless is an American science fiction drama television series that premiered on NBC on October 3, 2016. It stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, and Malcolm Barrett as a team that attempts to stop a mysterious organization from changing the course of history through time travel. The series was created by Shawn Ryan and Eric Kripke, and also stars Sakina Jaffrey, Paterson Joseph, Claudia Doumit, and Goran Višnjić. The executive producers include John Davis and John Fox of The Blacklist." That is from Wikipedia.

TBH, I personally do not require movies to be realistic or 100% plausible to enjoy them. It depends on the type of movie as to how believable I expect it to be.
But in the end, ALL movies are fake. Even the most realistic movies are as fake as the most implausible, unbelievable, fantasy movies. Because they're all scripted, acted, and edited together to create an illusion of continuity.
Some things will annoy me a tiny bit (such as pistols seeming to fire 30 rounds before requiring reloading), but not so much that I cannot enjoy a particular movie.
If I required everything I watch to be totally realistic, I would only watch the news (which I virtually NEVER watch anymore); and even half of that is fake.

Depends on what types of movies or TV shows one likes to watch.
Not really big into comedies personally, but there are a few that I watched over the years.
I mostly like Dramas, Westerns, Thrillers and Horror.
Some action movies depending on what they are, not so much the 80's action movies thing though. I do however like the 80's TV shows, when there used to actually be stuff to watch on TV that was worth watching.
Back when the TV shows had like 35+ episodes per season.
The season ran from September through June back in the day.

I always get a little side smile when someone presents a Glock, and then you hear it cock!
Re: "Nitpicking" movies/tv shows
One that gets me laughing is the trope where somebody is in the road, for whatever reason. And here comes the semi truck. But the driver doesn't put on the brakes at all. Just blows horn then proceeds to run said person over. In most movies, the truck just keeps going. Makes me wonder what planet screenwriters live on. Lol!

I've got one for you, SEF. If Star Trek universe is so advanced, why do the uniforms not redirect the energy from phasers? We have bullet proof clothing, today, and we can redirect laser energy, why can't they redirect phaser and disruptor energy with their uniform materials?SpyderEdgeForever wrote: ↑Tue Dec 23, 2025 11:51 amYes, I am aware fictional and even based on true story dramas are mostly meant to entertain.
