I know handle shapes, contours, thicknesses and textures are all subjective, but i miss the thinness of some of the oldies. We typically consider the FRN mid-locks to be thin, but it is all relative.
Agreed. My first money goes toward thinner handles, if they're available.
Fast forward a few months and my work needs now will dictate that I can no longer wear any of my EDC items clipped. No more knives, flashlights, pens or pencils. So I have been trying out my current collection, with pocket clips removed. It's an interesting journey. So many years of carrying, reaching in the same spot for my blade, now I have to retrain.

My EDC has not really changed from the Rex45 Native Chief and SE Chaparral LWT in the last 8 months. I have discovered i do not like the Chief in pocket without a clip, but alternative scales and or pocket slip is still a possibility.

For a recent hike, I had planned to take the Native Chief, but even clipped, it poked my leg so uncomfortably (when stepping upward, as in scrambling over rocks) it got bounced, and a Manix replaced it. Nothing wrong with the design, just the length of it!

May I ask why you can't use clips any more? Some work rule?

IWB carry solves so many issues I see people posting about.

Every time I see a Cobra Hood I'm going to mention how I wish they were more common. I think I'd have one on every thumb ramp knife I own, and they might actually sway my preference for non thumb ramp designs over to thumb ramps. They just make a terrible amount of sense.

Have to set the example as management, and I can't afford a repaint on $30k paint job.

I did a 50 miler this summer with the Chief clipped in my pocket without problem. I am right handed but carry both left and right. Usually my larger knife goes in my right rear pocket, clipped closest to the outward seam. Right front pocket seam has been reserved for a pen or pencil for a very very long time.

seconding this. I wish they'd bring them back. If you do a lot of hard cutting with your thumb on the ramp by the opening hole, it makes a massive difference in comfort.

Another advantage is they would make knives with partially obscured opening holes much easier to operate. Native Chief, Siren, etc.

I think one would look great on my Military 2 Salt.

Thanx for the input. When we created the "Cobra Hood", it was to make it easier for some that had difficulty with just the hole, and for gloved hands. There were some issues with performance and sales were quetsonable. Maybe if it were smaller and shaped differently?

My problem with the Cobra hood is two fold. So far, they've been used on tip up only knives and compression lock knives, neither of which I care for. In combination, it makes a no go knife for me. Bad experiences with an ATR and a Salsa confirm it.

Big Sal,

You should throw the Cobra Hood on the new 5" Police. I personally like it , for what it's worth...

My only real concern is if they get in the way of sharpening, and/or lower angle sharpening but if they're attached with a screw then I can take them off for this.

And for all the reasons you mentioned is why I think they're brilliant, they aid you in opening, they make the thumb ramp itself more comfortable to use hard, I think just about the only other thing you could have them do is stick up and also act as an Emerson Wave hook but that might be infringing on the patent too much.
