4” Combo Edge Knife?

#1

Post by WilliamMunny »

Going to be getting a Stretch 2 XL Combo Edge in VG-10 soon. I plan to use it as an do everything one from rope, zip ties, rescue, fine work, whatever.

Other option is a PE in VG-10 or SPY-27.

Any thoughts on combo edge, I am 90% sold on it? I was never a huge fan of CE on a small knife 3”, but on a 4” blade I am very interested in thinking it would be useful in its handle everything role.

Thanks

I went from a misinformed CE skeptic, believing what people were parroting on the internet, to a converted believer once I took the plunge and tried it myself.

My first try was a FFG CE Thin Red Line Endela. I didn’t particularly enjoy the Endela model, but it gave me enough of a glimpse into CE to see the potential. Pretty soon after I got a Thin red line Endura and I was convinced.

Ever since the S2XL was revealed I’ve been waiting for the (in my eyes inevitable) FFG Salt version, and preferably with a CE option.
Non of that has come to fruition yet, so I might eventually cave and get a VG-10 CE. I really don’t need more VG-10 in my life though.

My opinion of combo edges is directly proportionate to the length of the blade, longer blades mean a more usable length of either edge type and that's where it starts to make sense. Besides that the only reason I don't buy them is because I get by just fine with the little inch or so if plain edge that most "full SE" blades have so I've just never felt like I needed more of a 50/50 mix.

every time I carry my CE C95 or CE Catcherman, I struggle to find things the SE portion cuts better than the PE.

I agree they make more sense on longer blades, but for my uses PE makes even more sense.

The Stretch XL is a great knife in any edge configuration though, can't go wrong with that design.

The currently discounted Resilience S35VN CE is what you need. The best $76 you will ever spend.

I always envisioned the SE portion cutting rope, seat belts, leather belt, heavy duty zip ties, etc. better especially in rescue type situations.

Someone also mentioned the PD1 version is still around, great steel, just never crazy about coated blades.

Funny, I’ve found exactly the same thing with the Catcherman. I guess maybe it’s handy for cutting fishing line, but I don’t do much fishing these days (ironically, living on a small island).

Exactly, I would love to try them all in person but no Spyderco dealers near to me so I have to rely on the next best thing… the Spyderco forum.

In all honesty I may just flip a coin this weekend to pick one, I know I won’t be disappointed which ever one I get. CE can be a polarizing topic, seems people love them or hate them. The concept seems awesome but it doesn’t always translate to real world performance and I have gotten some good feedback back so far.

Spyderco Thin Red Line Endura.

FFG with a combo edge.

Terrific CS blade with enough length to be useful. Highly recommend. And it’s on closeout, so a great price.

YMMV but I've cut all those materials with PE without any problems.

Soon after joining up here, I was reading all the opinions about swashbuckling seamen sailing the seven seas, slicing manila rope in the middle of storms, toothy blades, coarse stones, blah, blah, blah. Well I ain't no pirate, and when it's raining, I stay inside like any sensible person would. As luck would have it, that weekend I found myself in a situation where I was going to need to cut some rope. I thought about what people were saying, and was kicking myself for polishing my blade to some absurdly fine finish. But you know what? My knife sliced through every length of rope like a warm blade through grass-fed goat butter. The takeaway was that sharp blades cut stuff.

Regarding the PD#1... the red and black looks pretty darned cool.

Hi WilliamMunny,

I understand and agree. And this forum is probably the best source for any information regarding Spyderco, or many other questions about our industry in general. We've got some very bright and very knowledgeable folks visitin' here. Historians like Brian, Metallurgists like Larrin, Folks that have been watching our company for a long time. Folks that are very OCD about drilling down to the truth.

So I'll spice up the taste. You buy the model of your choice. If you are not pleased with it to sort your issues, I'll buy it back from you.
Hey Rusty,

Combo edge is best edge, if a model I want offers it I'll always choose it no matter the size. Such a shame it isn't more widely accepted among knife enthusiasts. The serrated part cuts nearly everything just as well as a straight edge would, but some things better. Even with something smaller like a Delica it's also a great way to have a dedicated abusive cutting tasks spot on the blade. Then you get to save a sharper straight edge for more precise cuts, or the few materials that serrations may not excel with.

Appreciated as always, but in 30+ years of buying Spyderco knives I haven’t found one I don’t like. You would think in all that time I would know if I like CE or not, but taste evolve I guess. I am just lucky I don’t live in Golden otherwise I would be paying for a new truck for you in the amount of knives I would buy. Haha

Early happy Thanksgiving everyone, thanks for all the input.
