What is your favorite Spyderco collaboration knife?

#1

Post by srivats »

I did a search and did not find a specific discussion on this, so thought would start a new thread.

https://www.spydiewiki.com/index.php/Co ... tion_model

Spyderco has made some really wonderful factory knives collaborating with fantastic makers (list above). Of all these knives, what is your top 3? top 1?

I am more drawn to the older classics as time goes by. I added a C38 Jess Horn lightweight recently and eagerly waiting for my C134 Gayle Bradley 1 in the mail. I would love to add an older C46 Lum in the future. But have to think about which in those dozens of great knives above would be in my top 3, it's not easy!

Without any doubt: Wayne Goddard.

In the 4V sprint version actually even competing with my overall favorite plain edge folder, the HAP40 Endura... (so the Wayne Goddard definitely is in my top two PE folders)

Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

Choosing only 3 isn't easy, but I'll probably go for:

1 Persian (the first one that came to my mind)
2 Yojimbo
3 Kapara

I have or have had all three, but naturally there are quite a few others I'd like to try (the Vrango being at the top of the list, even though I'll likely never even see one)
Time is a great teacher. Unfortunately, it kills all its pupils.

I could only manage a top five --whittling it down to three wasn't possible when there were many other models I wanted to add to the list.

My five favorites are the Yojimbo 2, Spydiechef, Sliverax, PPT, and Drunken. If forced to choose only one, I'd probably go with the PPT.

Tough to narrow down, there are many that are really great so I'll just list some favorites in no particular order:

Massad Ayoob
The whole Yo family (Yojimbos 2 personal favorite)
J.D. Smith
Wayne Goddard
Paul Alexander's Sliverax
Gayle Bradley GB1
Lum Chinese

It’s the GB1 for me and nothing else is close. It has proven to be a tank of a knife.
Do right always. It will give you satisfaction in life.

My favorite is my old Wegner Jr. It’s the one that started me down this whole rabbit hole mess!

Been one of my top 5 Spydercos for over a decade now.

Anyone looking for a lightweight and compact EDC or hiking fixed blade should seriously consider one. Under $100 shipped at Dack, great value.

There are so many good ones.

Let’s not forget what Shawn Houston has brought to the table with his understanding of heat treatment optimization. From what I understand, it goes further than what he has been able to do with 15V. So experiencing 15V in Spyderco’s core models is up there for me.

As far as models go, my current favorites are the Yojimbo2, the Murray Carter kitchen knives, the Masad Ayoob, the Kapara and the Siren.

This is such a cool thread. I don't think I can contribute much, but I'll be paying attention to learn more.

If I had to choose w/ such limited knowledge, I would say the Vallotton, which I don't own, but would like to at some point.

This is such a hard quetion, there are so many I like and so many I still have yet to try. @srivats I also have an eye out for a GB1, tried a GB2 for a few years but think the GB1 will be the real winner for me if I can find one at the right price that is.

First to mind... Hollow ground M4, great balance, perfect size for my tastes, carries much better than the GB1, classy AF.

You know I love some others, but right now I can't think of a better EDC user than the retired Hall of Famer GB2.

The only one that's made it into the rotation is the Goddard. Not the plastic upside down version, the real one... micarta tip down with TEETH. ;)

Way too hard. All told, my favorite collaborator is probably Ed Schempp, but I enjoy all the collaborations I own.

Some favorites: Schempp Bowie, full-size Schempp Persian, Lance Clinton's Waterway, Mike Read's P.I.T.S., large Lum Folder, Jonny Liao's Hundred Pacer, Mike Janich's Yojumbo... I could go on and on.

Edited to say this is an awesome thread topic!

I'd have to go with

Brouwer
SpydieChef
South Fork

In probably that order, but that can vary.

While there are many good ones like the Fred Perrin line, for me it is the Spyderco Ed Schempp Navaja. I love that folder. I so wish Spyderco and Ed would make a Light Weight Navaja, but, I am eager to see the postulated Scimitar like design they have on the drawing board, or, as it is now, the CAD file.
