When Is the new coating coming out?
When Is the new coating coming out?
The one replacing dlc that Eric talked about. I like how DLC looks, but i dont care for the added friction while cutting things like fruit, boxes, etc. Just wondering if there has been any update on this.

I don't even like DLC, to me it feels like it drags on whatever I cut.
I wish companies would quit using that and just polish the blades. Lettuce keep things oiled, it worked since the dawn of man.

Hi Capt.Carl,
We've been using it on parts like clips and liners. The first blade coating model is in-the-works right now,

The new SMKW Para 3 exclusive DLC coating seemed a little more slick and darker black. I thought it may have had the new coating. But the paperwork says DLC so it could be the oil they put on the blade.

Re: When Is the new coating coming out?
I can safely say that forever, I was one that hated the coated blades, main reason was the coating never really was robust enough for me and how I used my stuff for the main reason. It didn't stay on the blade long enough for me to ever get the knife dirty lol.
But since I have bought the first DLC coated knives and have used them more and more, I will be the first to jump on board with these new coatings, I think they show real promise. For more than just a protective coating too...
I have seen some of the DLC that was finished in a really flat dull finish that does tend to drag and load up as we use the blade to cut whatever.
So we need these blades to have the correct anchor pattern in them before the coating is applied but once it's cooked on and finished, it needs to be in a more polished finish. Then we get the best of both worlds.
Least in my opinion, just say'n...

Re: When Is the new coating coming out?
I have three DLC finished blades: one Benchmade, one Spyderco, and one Kunwu. Of the three, the Kunwu finish is polished, and I never noticed any drag when cutting anything. The finish seems as durable as on my Manix 2. I don't really like coated blades, but I will say the DLC is an exception. I'm looking forward to whatever Sal has in mind.
The absolute worst coating ever is a thick, rough powdercoat used by a certain US manufacturer. I can feel it drag (sometimes a lot) no matter what I'm cutting. It does, however, keep the high carbon steel from rusting...except on the edge, which still requires oiling.

Added a ceramic mug, "The Edge is a Ghost". Great mug!

Re: When Is the new coating coming out?
This is good news that potentially addresses a minor gripe I have expressed in the past about the black paint used on clips being soft and quickly showing wear.
I hope at some point we can buy replacement clips with the new coating direct from Spyderco.
