DLC?

#1

Post by andygold »

Looking at either a Yojimbo2 or a Yojumbo.

I see some vendors list the blade as black, and others list as DLC. I'm curious if the blade is black is it automatically DLC, or does Spyderco also make a black coating that's not DLC?

If there is more then one black coating..... and I'm looking at the knife and/or the box, is there some way to tell what coating I'm looking at before I purchase?

Hi, andygold:
Welcome to our forum. The coatings are DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) for both models.

We hope you enjoy your time with us.

AFAIK as a general rule -

Spyderco knives made in Golden CO, black blades = DLC.

Spyderco knives made in Japan and Taiwan, black blades = TiCN PVD

Not sure about their knives made in China or Italy, but probably a type of PVD as well.

The Chinese knives say the coating is "black oxide"

Currently, abbazaba and 8th_note are collectively correct, with one addition:

USA-made - DLC
Most Japan and all Taiwan - TiCN
Japan-made Perrin fixed blades - Ceramic
China - Black Oxide

It's also interesting to note that the TiCN coatings from Japan will look markedly different from the Taiwan-made knives. Although the coating process is basically the same, the surface prep of the blade is different. That makes the Taiwanese knives look almost like a black satin.

Stay safe,

Mike

My understanding is that it is similar to Cerakote, but I do not have any more specific information. In simple terms, it is applied as a spray and often heat cured, as opposed to an electrolytic process like TiCN, DLC, and other PVD coatings.

Stay safe,

In terms of mechanical durability, my understanding is that DLC>TiCN>ceramic>black oxide.
