I personally don't get the box opener. I'd rather have the standard can opener instead.

I bought the new Synergy, the version without scissors for my collection.
It is good to see Victorinox try new things.

It's an interesting tool, but not one I would enjoy to use.
Never liked clips, the blade lock is not practical and the package opener just feels weird to me, although it works really well.

I read a fair comment on another forum about the scale cut-outs on the new Synergy series.

The cut-outs around the pivot for the cap lifter/large flathead/pry tool have weakened that pivot area. This is the one tool that depends especially on the strength of the scales to withstand twisting and prying forces. Time will tell if this will be a significant handicap.

The cut-outs will also allow lint and debris into that pivot. :thinking

I'm a skeptic too. I love the traditional ALOX series. In addition to my Spyderco, I carry an ALOX Farmer at work and lots of other times too.

I agree with Hans about the specific concerns with the Synergy series.

I'm atypical in that i often don't clip my Spyderco knives, and i have no interest in a clip on a SAK.

Great points! It will be interesting to see if any of these inherent weaknesses come to light during long-term use.

Just more catch points and areas to introduce dirt, grit and crud into the workings.

The only thing I’ve ever needed Victorinox to do is upgrade the main blade steel so it isn’t blunt after a single use.

Victorinox Synergy
What's new about Synergy is the cut-out aluminum handles, clip and lock. Another new thing is that the can opener has been replaced with a package opener. The cut-out handles are for a pure visual effect. The clip is not tight which I like, you can easily hang it on your pocket and you can easily take it out. The lock does not please me because with one hand it is quite difficult and dangerous at least for me, you have to be careful when retracting the blade so that it does not slip and go where it should not. It seems that the clip is the best of all the innovations. Compared to the Victorinox EvoGrips 18, the Evo lock is many times better made, safer, and easier to work with.
