It was a pretty sweet deal. I've never owned a Sharpmaker and this one came in for under $50. It arrived yesterday and I've already used it to get very sharp edges on a couple of different knives despite neglecting to read the manual at first (in my defense, I did watch Sal's instructional video from 1999 on YouTube). It takes longer to bring back serrated K390 but I managed to get it paper-slicing sharp after a few attempts.

As for the other two, they coincidentally arrived together today. It was a good mail call:

Your post encouraged me to order a NIB Sharpmaker as well, just now. (Thanks also for pointing out that Sal's instructional video was up on YT!) I hope I'll make it work, but I sure as heck won't practise on any Spyderco at first. :grin-sweat

Beautiful knives, there. I'm always somewhat bewildered by the Dodo, it looks like the mother of all box cutters, but am I missing something else?

(And I hope it's okay I'm posting these hapless comments and questions. I may have been bit hard, but I have no illusion about my lack of knowledge and wisdom, despite spending most of my free time watching Spyderco related videos. Sorry if this is completely out of place...)

I have not been here too long either. Like you, I started small and got bit hard and had the collection explosion. One thing I have learned is this: This forum is all about learning. Us customers learn about the vast array of options that is Spyderco knives, models, steels, handles, etc. and how to use and maintain them. Spyderco learns about our individual likes, dislikes, what fits our hand/usage or doesn't, and sometimes an issue with something. And, along the way, we have a lot of interesting discussions. So, keep asking, learning, and growing and, once you reach the point you can, share your experiences with the next group to arrive. Don't be shy about starting a new thread for some specific questions. It may make it easier to find/reference in future.

Been wondering if I'm missing something with all the hype around PM2 & Native 5 so figured I'd use the Crucible situation as an excuse 2 grab both. All black PM2 with MagnaCut & Native 5 LW with 15V. New models, new steels.

Unreasonably high expectations for MagnaCut & slightly worried about 15V & how it'll survive wandering the woods through winter, gets around -30°C (froze my toes black last winter in -33°C so like -27°F or something) & either extremely dry or just wet, not even humid.

Now THAT is a usable leather sheath! The Spyderco sheath retains the knife very well, is well made, and can be hung from a belt. But I find it difficult to extract a knife with one hand. So I have a Boltaron sheath for use when I carry a Mule.

But your new leather sheath would be great.

No worries, all my questions and comments are hapless. I bought the Dodo because I was curious and it became one of my favorite EDCs. It's a great little knife with a hand-filling handle. The hook on the end of the blade is great for gathering and cutting cord or die-cutting decals or paper labels, etc., in addition to being a great box cutter as you said. I usually like my knives on the larger side (PM2 and up) but the Dodo is a happy exception.

Have you had a chance to use the Sharpmaker yet? I'm very happy with mine.

Cheers.

Cool! The micarta was lighter than I expected, but I'm sure it will darken with use.

Mikey,

It will darken as you use it, it acts like an old rope and the more you use it, the darker it works into it. There may get to a time you will want to try and clean it to lighten it back up lol.

It will absolutely darken up. You just need to keep it in steady use/rotation for it to happen.

Sage 6 sprint run 🥳 I'm 43 years old, but when I need to wait for a knife like this in the mail I have the patience of a 5 year old 😂
