All jokes aside. I had a Para 3 LW open in a pair mesh gym shorts. Not sure how it happened but I was digging for my keys. Now I only carry lock back knives when wearing gym shorts. The detents are stronger. I’ve worked with sheet metal for over 20years. Knife cuts are very baby compared to some of the metals cuts I’ve seen and got myself. Not to mention I almost cut my thumb off with a chainsaw 🤦‍♂️. Cuts happen is all I’m saying. It’s what makes a knife not a spoon lol.
pocket carry?

I always carry IWB when wearing running shorts. The thin, floppy material doesn't work so well clipped to the pocket. Even if they don't open up, easier to have one accidentally come unclipped in my experience.

Yea in the pocket. I switched to DF because it flops to much but I’ll have to try waistband carry. And a salt knife lol.

yeah, IWB is the way to go in athletic shorts. Even something like a Manix XL stays put pretty well, while a feather light knife flops all over the place in the pocket.

I IWB a DF 2 Salt SE when trail running and it is surprisingly easy to forget it is there.

Ouch! That sucks! I've never had a knife open in my pocket before. But if there's one that would do it, it would be my GB2. Almost no detent to speak of. I can open it with a flick of the wrist. No finger or thumb. Also, I never carry anything in the same pocket as my knife. Mostly so my knives don't get scatched up. But I never have to go fishing around my pocket with a potentially open blade.

happens much more easily with detent based locks.

bit by a para 2 tip up and a tip down military 1.

carrying against the seam of the pocket or carrying tip down aren't magic bullets, it can still happen.

this is the #1 reason I prefer locks with a self close bias, whether its a lockback, slipjoint, ball bearing lock or the compression lock the szabo folder had. Safer than detent based locks.

Hope you didn't get bit bad.
I compared a Sage 6 (button comp. lock) with a Leaf Jumper (back lock), and I was surprised by the difference. The LJ will close itself if slightly open, but not the Sage 6. I still like the Sage 6, but will be more careful. A knife like the S6 I just carry loose in my pocket, without much else in that pocket.

@SpaceMonkey , Welcome to the forum, and I hope you are healing well! Maybe tightening the pivot screws slightly would help prevent an accidental opening?

Sucks when that happens. I never had that happen with my Military compression lock yet. I did have that hapoen a few times with a Benchmade Griptillian 4 times. Twice getting me good.
And once with a Cold Steel Finn Wolf of all things. Due to the thumb stud catching on my pocket.

I've had knives open in my pocket and that's the reason why I don't like detent based locks. I want a knife that has a biased to close. My wife had a liner lock open in her purse, and she won't carry them anymore because of that. She'll only carry a back lock.

Just dropping a note that my Sage 6 bit my thumb good today. Put my hand in my front right jean pocket to grab my reading glasses and the blade was open. This is my typical setup, phone in front left and knife+readers in front right. Can honestly say this is a first time for me in many years of carrying, so for the time being I'm going to be a little more mindful to keep that pocket light when I'm carrying the Sage. Anyone else have a similar experience?
Last year, I bought a Sage 1 (Maxamet). While clipped in my pocket one day, I reached in and discovered it was open, luckily before it drew blood. I was not happy. Now, most of the time, I carry a Native 5 or LeafJumper (stiff lockback, much less likely to accidentally open). When I want to carry something more fidgetworthy like the Sage 1 or other knife with less closing bias than a lockback, I deliberately carry it clipped to the pocket with the blade facing the edge of the pocket where the pocket might help keep it closed.

Had a few PM3s and PM3 LWs open on me over the years in my pocket. I'm not a fan of comp locks for this reason. My collection of Seki backlocks is all I need!

I had a Hogue Deka come partially open as I was pulling it out of a tight pants pocket while seated. Thumbstud snagged on the pocket seam. Spydiehole > thumbstud in this instance.

Don't know if a backlock would have fared better than the able-lock though, as PM2Josh said he had a close call with a CS Finn Wolf.

This happened with my Lil Native.
I carried tip-up clipped on the cargo pants leg pocket and it must have came open somehow whilst I was either walking or climbing over livestock barriers.

I found out about it when I sat down! :head-bandage

Not carried the Lil Native since. Just back locks and slip joints for me now.

Had this happen to me with the same knife however these days I don’t wear tight fitting clothes. I really like the knife but I’ll never carry it again, nor do I carry any knife with thumb studs. I thought about selling it but it’s just to dangerous to let anyone else have it. All the other Hogues I have are autos and among my favorite automatics.

Whoa, that sounds serious!

The button on the Sage 6 does stick out proud from the scales, and I’m wondering if it is possible to have the knife open if you were to lay the knife on a flat surface, button side down, and push the knife flat. It may be more of a ‘2nd detent/single detent’ question at that point.

stuff like that can definitely happen.

when I first got into CCW I'd carry around 5 o clock. Had to change carry positions because my body kept activating the mag release when I sat down.

That could be embarrassing?

Carry location is different for different folks, but it is an important part of carry.

Yes. I once dropped a mag because I was using a slightly extended button release (still a factory part) because it was a righty only release and being lefty, I needed something to get a little extra purchase on w/ my index finger. Pressed against the kydex and whoop! Fortunately it was in the grass at the park at a casual event and nobody really noticed. But still…you learn…

luckily I only ever did that getting into my car. Would have been pretty embarassing doing that while out to eat or similar.

The button on the Sage 6 contacts the lock bar, and doesn't do anything until the knife is locked open. I think of it as the opposite of a side-opening automatic knife where the button allows the knife to open (and close), where on the Sage 6 pressing the button just allows the knife to close. I still like the Sage 6 and often carry it loose in my pocket, but like many tools caution is advised. If the Sage 6 easily opens (like in your pocket) then the pivot screws are probably too loose.
