I wonder if the pricing more reflects the production number (i.e. very low numbers). No doubt to be popular amongst collectors, but not sure how the avg joe will afford this one.

I did play with one at the SFO this week, and apart from a slight concern about me figuring out which way it would open if I wasnt looking at it, it was a neat piece, probably the best package opener type knife in existence.

All Japanese production knives from Spyderco are expensive, and spy27 blades from any country are overpriced relative their specs (for example, they cost more than the same model with s30v/s45vn/etc. despite being their vg10 level replacement). Given those, this one is a bit under what I'd expect tbh

There should be one more MAP sale this year. If this comes out in time I'll be looking to pick one up then for sure.

To say that something is "overpriced" implies unfair pricing? Our pricing is based on our costs and is consistent with our normal margins. Japan is expensive, and shipping US steel to Japan is also expensive.

Respectfully, I must say you are reading that into the post. Overpriced requires comparison but does not imply unfairness from your part.

Compared to other countries of manufacture, they are overpriced to the materials and quality. That is what I meant by the statement. The reasons are as you state.

Stating it explicitly, I intended no offense. Just like all other Japanese manufacturing, I wish it was elsewhere so it'd be cheaper and better quality at the same time. Love me some Taiwan and US produced Spyderco's. My first was a Emerson opener Endura from a dealer for ~$50, but we are a long way from those days :bug-red

Sal,

"Overpriced" is in the eye of the beholder. The term is used loosely, and IMO does not imply Spyderco in any way prices their products unfairly.

To some name brand name bottled water is overpriced, to me the Lincon Navigator is overpriced and so on. IMO when this term is used it implies it is more than someone is willing to spend on something not that it's not fair or worth the price.

Unfortunally my wife thinks every Spyderco I purchase is way overpriced, to me it's some of the best money I spend.

Thanx Phaust, WilliamMunny,

I'll adjust my dictionary. Also thanx much for the support over the years. I can't hardly remember a $50 Endura.

It’s gotten crazy out there. I was just in Scotland for work and needed quick food. A small burger, small fires and drink cost me $25 at Five Guys…

I always thought old people were “cheap” when i was young. Now that I am older I realize they just knew better.

Very interesting knife and cost would not bother me if I wanted one . It’s not my cup of tea but many enjoy using and owning one . MG2

I'm a fan of Ed Schempp's designs. This Balance sprint is intriguing, although I'd find an Equilibrium much more compelling. Perhaps it is wishful thinking, but maybe those are in the production queue?

Few other knife brands are as collectable as Spyderco's. I am sure the little Balance will appreciate quite a bit in a few years, and the Balance certainly is a collectable Spyderco. I guess I bought the last one at National Knives. :bug-red

In EU available at Lamnia

But I’m cheap—I’d rather buy another Military 2 for that kind of money.

Interesting the photo for NCBlade says “VG-10” as opposed to SPY27.

I meant by clicking the link at the top of the thread and looking at the photo that NCBlade uses for the product photo.

And I meant they use the prototype photo (from https://spyderco.com/products/balance™- ... print-run®) which has VG-10 markings on the blade (mentioned by Eric in the video above)

This!

A while back I craved a Balance or an Equilibrium, but experiences with the McBee (too dense, too lose-able for the £££) and Manbug Wharnie SE (too good) informed my current preferences for light weight, utility & price comfort.
