Dan recommended me to come post here. We have been following caterpillars as they turn into monarchs at my house lately. Amazingly we were able to find this caterpillar right after it exited the chrysalis while it was still drying its wings getting ready to fly.

Yes I do haha, that’s my youngest. He sure thought it was cool. And he did a good job being gentle and careful with the butterfly.

anyone got an idea?

normally I'm good with ID'ing snakes but I wasn't sure about this one.

plant and animal ID app said the following:

eastern rat snake
western rat snake
california king snake
Eastern massasauga
many banded krait

out of those rat snake and eastern massasauga look the closest to me.

the pattern on its head makes me lean heavily towards some form of rat snake. massasauga's have a much different pattern on top of their head.

I initially thought it might be a corn snake but it's a bit more grey and less red than I would expect.

I think your I.D is correct - Looks like a young Eastern Rat Snake.

I think Nick is correct . We had a large Garter Snake in big island landscaping bed this week which totally surprised mymwfe cutting back Hibiscus. Quite the panic attack ! Didn’t have time for a shot but caught him and released it to farther back part of yard . Dan
