Re: Do you like open back knives?
My small collection of folders (four Spydercos) are all lock backs, and yeah, I’d say my preference is at least partially due to the closed back ergos feeling significantly better to me.

Maybe I am getting a bit on in age but I remember when a lot of makers were pushing open back construction as “easy to clean” as the main advantage. I never had a problem. Soapy warm water, a brush, bobs your uncle.
I dont have a preference.
If something damages the edge, I sharpen it. Has happened several times over the years that a few coins got stuck in between the blade and handle causing a damaged edge.

Re: Do you like open back knives?
The thing that strikes me, reading this thread, is how many people still seem to carry loose change in their pocket.
I rarely see anyone pay with cash these days, and the one time this year I saw someone write a check at the grocery store, the checkout person had to buzz the manager to come show her what to do with it. I don't think she had ever seen one.
Related to keys dinging the blade, the only safety drawback I've seen with the Spydie hole is when my wife pulled her keys out of her handbag, and in the process the keys pulled out her Ladybug by the opening hole, and it did indeed flip the blade open in the process.

Spidiechef in a sailcloth sheath.

Pros: easy to clean, dries fast
Cons: not a lockback
Cons: not a lockback
Just one more knife...
