Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
I've tried a bunch of mid-sized folders, including a few Brand Xs and Spyderco Sage and Para 3. After 'fidgeting' with different locks for the past few years, and having a liner-lock pop open in my pocket (no injury, luckily), I picked up a Native 5 to try Spyderco's version of a lock back.
This one had SPY27 steel; SPY27 didn't really seem significantly different to me than S30V until I sharpened it. After a short break-in period, this knife, with its sleek closed profile, excellent ergonomics, and great steel, became my favorite mid-size carry.
How did I lose it? I don't know. I went a couple weeks without carrying a mid-size, and now I cannot find the Native--everything else is where it's supposed to be. It's frustrating. I've looked everywhere. My guess is, the Native will remain lost forever unless, and until, I decide to replace it.

The Native 5 is a stellar knife!
Personally, I prefer the LW models.
Loosing a knife sucks! Many, if not most, enthusiasts can relate.
I had one of the pink “Breast Cancer Project” Native 5’s in my early collection, which I subsequently gifted. Since then, a few have passed through my hands but also subsequently gifted. I currently have a LW Salt with no intention of giving it away…but hat could change if someone close needs a good knife.
You should replace it. Now that you’ve had one, you’ll feel incomplete without one. I know from experience!

Yeah. I know I need to replace it. The good news is, even the SPY27 version is still plentiful.

Re: Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
I lost a camo flashlight on a hunt one time. Note to self: don't use camo flashights outdoors!
I was not happy because it was my favorite light at the time. Anyway, found it the next morning in the dark while we were bushwacking the trail from the day before.
Hopefully you will stumble over your knife. Not literally of course!

Keep looking. I spent a large part of last night looking for my Rex45 Native, wanting to strop it. Checking the usual spots, checking and re-checking drawers, yard, mentally retracing my steps, regressing deep in my past (lol), until finally faintly remembered it might be in the pockets of my new work pants i wore before the hot weather started, like, in May.
I also have a Spy27 Native and i also stropped it last night and then carried it today. It's so sharp it can easily shave bits off of my nails.

Heck I would first off go to Nationalknives.com and just get a replacement, then resume the hunt. Having a couple of your favorite edc knives is not a bad thing lol
https://www.nationalknives.com/spyderco ... o+native+5
Or the frn version, little cheaper
https://www.nationalknives.com/spyderco ... o+native+5
Or my pick of this model would be this one...
https://www.nationalknives.com/spyderco ... o+native+5
There is even a sprint run with Carbon Fiber and S90V steel for a little more. These are all in stock and if you become a member by registering at this dealer at checkout you will get a discount on the price listed.
This dealer also will wrap your new knife in a microfiber hand towel and box it up and ship it quickly. He is an awesome dealer...

Re: Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
I've told a story here several times about how a lost knife is the whole reason I ever found Spyderco. I lost a Buck at work and was so mad about it I went out shopping for a new knife and found the Walmart Native, thought the thumb hole was brilliant so I looked up the brand and found their website, then noticed the Bug logo was missing from mine as well as the Golden Colorado engraving so I got paranoid that Walmart were somehow selling fakes so I returned it and went to Bass Pro Shop and paid more than 2x the Walmart price for a "real" one and the second time around I also opted for the serrated version. So not only did a lost knife introduce me to Spyderco but also to serrations on a folder. That was actually 20 years ago this year, probably even around this time of year.

I feel as though I’ve looked everywhere. But of course, I haven’t. I’ll figure it out.
As for National Knives, I just checked them out. Their price for a Native 5 Salt SE Magnacut is very good indeed! I’ll have to consider this one carefully. Thanks for the suggestion!

Lost a para 3 salt serrated this weekend fishing.
That sucked!
However…… there are countless Spyderco knives donated to Mother Earth from the Middle East to the good old USA.
I’ll figure it out someday!

Re: Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
I had a small Sebenza lost deep in a couch for two years. Searched couch at least once but found during a deep clean some time later. It will likely show up some day but go ahead and get a replacement either way
Re: Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
Lost knives that I have actually found are most often found either deep between the cushions of a sofa or chair or between the seat and center console of my car.
Re: Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
I've only lost one since I joined the forum. The blacked out serrated Pacific Salt 1 I used to EDC maybe around 2018? Had it with me camping one night, realized it was missing later the next day, and never did come across it again.
normally I have no issues with black, green or camo colored stuff in the woods. Black flashlights and folders, green and black fixed blades and packs, od green or black paracord to string up tarps.....never been an issue save for that one time.
Luckily I had plenty of back-ups of that model. Think I have a total of 11 Pacific Salts still, despite preferring newer salts like the Military 2. They make great gifts if nothing else, and I'll always hold on to a handful for personal use.

Re: Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
Last week, I received my Native 5 LW SPY27 replacement. Just as nice as the first one. I then received a Native 5 LW CPM 15V. That made two Native 5s.
And then, of course, the original just showed up. It turns out my “lost” Native 5 had become wedged between a seat runner and the transmission hump in my car.
So now I have 3. Nope. I’m not complaining. It’s always good to have a backup or three.

Re: Lost Knife, Almost Always a Favorite
I've 'lost' a couple of my all time favourite knives over my life time, which covers several decades now.
In the 1970s I 'lost' a combined lock knife/knuckle duster. Utterly illegal to even own in the UK now but back then you could buy them off the shelf in the British army stores with no age restrictions and no questions asked quite lawfully. Being a teenager, of course I wanted one, not for violence, but it sure looked cool. The way I lost it was I got bored with it and sold it within months of buying it, which in a way is even worse than losing it as I was complicit in no longer owning it.
In the 1980s, a store near me had an exact replica of the First Blood Rambo knife. I bought it after a few months of seeing it in the display case. And I kept it for 20 years. Then I gave it away on a whim to a friend. So that was 'lost' too. I am my own worst enemy.
These days I buy multiples of the same knife if I love it. My three all time favourite knives these days are the Endura 4, the UKPK, and the Tasman Salt 2 and I've bought quite a few. It takes the stress away of worrying about one going missing, although being in the UK, the only one out of those knives I can legally carry without a good reason whatever that may be, is the UKPK, and speaking to my local police force, they're not too sure either, as they all have their own personal ideas about what is legal to carry for what purpose. Anyhow I'm off subject. These days I avoid the risk of loss by buying more than one.
Three is two, two is one, and one is none as they say on the preppers shows

I think I need some more knives

Absolutely. I think its inevitable the things you like most will eventually come to harm through age or loss so why not insure against that by cloning your favourite knife by way of shopping for more before it disappears

Ouch! I felt that across the Atlantic right here in the UK.
Commiserations

Hey, it may still be out there, rain wont harm it, if its found it'd be as good as new with a clean up and some oil

Not my photo ... but one beast of a knife

Amazing isn't it? It's off the Heinnie Haines website. Makes me want to buy the knife right now
