Temperance 2... in 15v?

Gotta be honest, as much as I wasn't a fixed-blade guy before, and bought the knife years ago just out of speculation, my Temperance 2 has become without a doubt my most used knife in our household.

(Probably has something to do with it ending up on both "camp knife" and "kitchen knife" duty, and becoming one of my wife's favorites...)

I know it's the longest of longshots, but if there's any spare 15v lying around... any chance of a sprint run?

Of course, other steels would be great too...

Probably a real long shot. It doesn't look like we are going to me able to get any more of Shawn's 15V and what we have has already been earmarked. If it were possible to squeeze in a sprint version of that model with a different steel, what would work for you? Perhaps to "seize another day".

Thanx for the kind words on the design. The Temperance was one of my earliest fixed blade design, so I've got a soft spot for the design. I hand carved the Temperance 1 out of wood. The version that you have was my attempt to try to make the design more "General Use", Camp knife, food prep, all purpose, while the original design (Temperance 1) was leaning to Martial Blade Craft.

It's one of my favorite fixed blade designs, but I'm pretty biased.

Might I suggest 3V?

I've been incredibly impressed with it using it in a fixed blade from another brand.

For me it surpasses cruwear in every respect but ease of sharpening. It's tougher, holds an edge longer, and is much more corrosion resistant.

It takes a touch longer to grind than my cruwear temp but sharpening isn't difficult...I think it's more due to that knife having a much thicker grind really.

I would love to test out a Spyderco heat treat 3V general purpose camp knife. Temp 1 or 2 would be among my first choices.

Yes! I'm on board with 3v as well, it's a hard working steel, and I find it pretty resistant to rust for a "carbon" steel.

Well, you really did an amazing job with it. There's just something... extremely correct about the design. Really, really well done.

To be honest, I'm going to disagree with others here about 3V. My understanding is that compared to the original vg-10, 3V offers basically the same edge retention, at significantly greater toughness. But the knife geometry already makes it crazy tough, so I'm not sure the added toughness would really help any (I mean... I've already used the original to baton through camp wood to make kindling...).

Instead, I would look at improving the edge retention. Something luke cpm-m4, or 10V would be really interesting. Or... dare I hope... magnamax?

Your best bet at this point might be to find a 15V Mule. Not quite the same but it's a great little fixed blade.

The knife has a nice profile. I like the MagnaMax idea too. I might pick one or more up.

dunno about you but I'd be nervous batoning certain steels that go for edge holding more than toughness,like 15V or maxamet.

M4 I could definitely get behind. That has a nice balance of edge holding and toughness. But IME M4 and 3V don't have a wide disparity in edge holding. Maybe on paper they do, but in use,not so much for me.

regardless, if they bring the temp 2 back, I'll pick one up just like I did the cruwear temp 1 sprint. I should have bought the original when it came out, but I was more into swamp rat at the time for small fixed blades.

When the Temperance 2 came out I thought it would be a great platform for Elmax.
In reality, I would buy the knife in any of the steels mentioned. Just use it differently depending on the steel.

3V would be great. Pretty much like all the steels mentioned but 3V would be my top pick. Might I suggest 52100 also?

I might be in minority, but I've been extremely happy with how VG-10 performed on the Temp 2 platform. I think it's a case of the design having more merit than the actual type of steel being used here.

I'd buy a re-run made the exact same as the original.

VG10 might seem boring compared to the latest steels, but it's never let me down.

I've used street beats and street bowies and Police 3's in the woods more times than I can count.

Decent edge holding,fairly tough for a stainless, easy to sharpen and not very expensive. It's a reliable and well rounded steel.

I have a few chef knives made from vg10 as well and I've never had any complaints. I have a vg10 damascus petty that was hardened to 61-62rc IIRC, and it holds an edge quite well.

Temperance 2 is my favorite fixed blade. There is not a knife handle that fits my hand better. I would love to have one in 3v.
