Is the Wharncliffe a good blade for a first serrated edge?

#1

Post by burley_c »

Lurking on these forums has given me the itch to try a serrated edge knife to EDC for a bit. I have a vanilla delica 4 PE and really like it, so I'm looking at similarly sized knives. The Salt 2 3" SE looks promising. I'm tempted to get the Wharncliffe version of it, but I wanted to get some opinions on whether SE + Wharncliffe is a good combo or if I'd be better off with a more traditional blade shape for my first SE knife.

Absolutely, it's always a great option. Serrations are awesome for pull cuts, and most wharnies are also great for pull cuts so the two work together great, that's why so many of Spyderco's rescue oriented serrated knives are sheepsfoots.

I’ll agree with what he said and I’ll add that I find them to be a great compromise between a hawksbill blade and a more traditional blade shape with belly. More versatile than the hawk, but still having very efficient pull cuts.

YES!

I carry a Serrated Spyderco EVERY single day, along with a non-serrated knife of various shapes, sizes, and companies but bottom line, a Wharncliffe blade is probably the best way to get a feel for how amazing & powerful Serrated edges can be... here are some examples of my daily duo carries . . . once you use them, you'll wonder why you waited so long to 'go serrated'.

Just my 2c -- But I REALLY like serrated blades . . .

And FWIW Wharncliffe blades are just fantastic period.

Before I got the Enuff sheepsfoot, I used a Salt 2 wharnie regularly in the yard. It's very good at separating plant material.

As @Bearcat1 mentioned, it is a "Spyderco C178GP Kiwi 4" . . .

. . . at just under 2 ounces & the way it folds down It's an amazingly small & light knife that opens up into such a great cutting tool, it is one of my favorite knives Spyderco has ever made, love it! I did a clip swap with a Dragonfly3 on mine.

I appreciate all the insight and advice here! Just placed an order for a Salt 2 SE Wharncliffe in LC200N. Very psyched to try out a new blade type and an SE.

I'd disagree with the popular sentiment.
I think a first serrated knife should have some belly to it. It will work well for more stuff. I'd recommend the VG10 Endela or the serrated Chaparral.

It's just the OPs first serrated edge. Ain't nothing stopping him from acquiring other serrated blade shapes in the future :smlling-eyes

That Salt 2 Wharnie in LC200n SE cuts way above it's weight class. I just ordered a Harpey SE. Couldn't resist a stainless VG-10 SE hawkbill.

Why not? Some people got engaged with Spyderco in 80’s as their first modern folder and in Spyderedge… I once attended dinner at home of one French director and his first knife ever was not opinel or laguiole but Worker in SE he acquired in 80’s during his trip to U.S. This sparked his interest in knives but worker remained his favorite EDC - mainly for cutting plug tobacco for his Peterson pipes. Needless to say it is 6 years ago since I met him and the knife was in extremely used condition, I put fresh edge on it with my Doublestuff and he was very happy.

Go for whatever you like, my only recommendation would be to get Sharpmaker and choose knife in FFG and you will be very happy.

I’m sorry to go off-topic slightly, but I love the Kiwi, it is such a cool yet supremely functional looking knife. Very much a knife in Spyderco’s philosophy.

If Spyderco admin are listening can we bring these back into production please?

A small suggestion; side step some of the ugly, super-niche and ineffectual stuff no one really buys and bring us this back instead, if that’s ok? 🥳

Give it a Spy27 / blue G10 and I bet it would sell like hot cakes.
