Anyone have issues getting a Manix 2 blade centered after a scale swap?

#1

Post by Skylark427 »

Hello, I've done just about every trick that is posted online about trying to get the blade recentered on my 15V G10 Manix, slowly moving the scales around, tightening the screws one at a time, the paper trick, basically nothing I do will get the blade recentered while closed, I'm not sure if the scales are defective (Metanboss) or if one washer is slightly bigger than the other (haven't measured them with my calipers yet).

Anyone else experience this with Metanboss or any other brand of scales? Any tips?

Edit: I should also add that it didn't happen to my S110V version with the lanyard tube replacement, so I don't believe that to be the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

That looks pretty close to centered. I wouldn't sweat it. Just use it and enjoy it.

It's pretty close to the clip side, and occasionally scrapes that liner, when it didn't before. Is this just relatively common with scale swaps for the G10 version?

I can definitely still use it, it'll just eventually develop scratches on that side of the blade where it occasionally touches the liner.

If it's scraping that's not good. From the pic, it doesn't look that bad. I guess it's just the angle

I tend to keep my Spydercos stock so I don't have experience with aftermarket swaps.

I have a 15V Mili 2 that is slightly off center from the factory and I can't get it centered either. But it doesn't scrape.

Is the blade in the center if you put the original scales back?

Customized many of my Manix 2's and XL's and all are centered after the scale swap.
I would try do take it apart and put it back together again before coming to any conclusion there is something wrong.

I took it apart several times already, and yes, the blade was centered with both the original scales and lanyard tube, and the black G10 ones from an S30V model I put on it while I was waiting for these to be made.

I've reached out to Metanboss to see if this is a frequent issue or not, but so far nothing, I don't expect them to get back to me until tomorrow as it's a weekend.

Is it possible the friction from the lanyard tube held everything straight? Because I've noticed that these scales don't "grab" the lanyard tube like many other aftermarket scales do for other models.

I like to think of blade centering as scale straightening. The liners in the Manix2 are pretty stiff but they will bend slightly. I wonder if your scales aren’t perfectly flat and are bending the liner a little.

I've noticed if I take the new scales and bend them that the blade does go center. It's hard to say. But holding a Starrett straight edge to one side does confirm that the scales aren't 100% straight, at least on the outside, there is a small dip.

Wow, you literally nailed this issue dead on. Both scales were ever so slightly bent to one way, I carefully applied pressure to them and kept checking if they were straight, and once they were close, bolted them back together, and the issue is fixed.

Thank you so much! I greatly appreciated it 😀

Edited to include how the scales look as a whole. I can't thank you enough @zhyla

You've definitely won my appreciation. I don't know if that's good or bad, but I greatly appreciate it 😃

This knife, and all the 15V knives I bought were actually bought to replace a custom 15V knife with high hardness my late wife had made for me, our house was robbed in 2019, and we lost everything.

The scales were bought, alongside a matching clip for my S110V Manix work knife, in memory of the colors my wife loved in titanium, like blues and purples. So you have my great appreciation for helping me solve this. Thank you, I really mean that.

My Manix 2 XL wouldn't center after I installed AWT blemished scales. Everything functioned, just wouldn't center. I think the issue was with my installation of the stop pin(?). These are the only AWT scales that I had this happen on. I ended up putting the G10 back on for the moment. Thinking about going the Titanium route...

I'd love to know what others think of the Rockscale "skinny" M2 XL scales?

I can't comment on their Manix skinny scales, but I have their single liner delete scales for my 15V Millie 2, and I love them. They're definitely high quality.

Oddly enough, I was looking into AWT scales for when I get a LW Maxamet Manix, as I am not a huge fan of the FRCP handles on my pinned 2015 S110V LW Manix, that's partially why I got my G10 S110V Manix, the LW was and is incredibly stiff, where the G10 one feels as if it has bearings in the pivot, even with the pivot fully tight, same as my 15V one.

I've been looking into a Cruwear XL Manix, I'm not familiar with how it operates, but I've read it uses the same ball bearing lock and cage, so shouldn't it also have a similar backstop?

Thank you so much, these scales were picked for sentimental reasons for the 15V Manix, I greatly appreciate your compliments 😊

The XL has a concealed pin in place of the screws used by the M2. Same lock and cage except for that.
