Sage 6 first impressions
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Oh I see what you're saying - this is definitely something you could do with too much pressure near the pivot because you're gonna squeeze the liners into the pivot bushing. Happens on something like a Chaparral even, though you don't really have a reason to squeeze around there on a back lock. In normal operation though I can't press on the button hard enough to pinch the bushing.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Could someone enlighten my on the second detent? Are there any pics? Has anyone taken theirs apart and taken pics?
Peter
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
I didn't get any pics, but here's a video on YT of someone taking their detent out:
It's only there to add pressure and help the blade not swing out freely if you press the button while closed.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Take the show side scale off and there will be a tiny spring showing. Remove the spring and under that is the 2nd detent. Use something magnetic by the way. The spring is basically pushing the detent through the hole when the scale is on to create some friction. I personally prefer the sage 6 with 2nd detent as it prevents bounce but you do need some wrist action to close.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Yeah, I think theres a detent hole on the blade for the 2nd detent, I never checked but I feel like the opening action is snappier with the 2nd detent in. If anyone knows where to get a lighter spring for 2nd detent that would be awesome though. I like that it mimics linerlock/framelock detent drag on closing but spring could definitely be weakened for the same effect.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Contrarian but I'm used to and like the second detent/bearing on the Sage 6 and Smock.
When you are holding the button and inertial opening in any orientation it keeps the blade in the same fully closed position for consistency.
Similarly, when inertial closing it helps catch the blade fully closed even if your timing in releasing pressure on the button isn't perfect.

Re: Sage 6 first impressions
I agree! I am rather new and don't always have the timing down. So far only one minor cut though!
I do have multiple Smocks now so maybe I will try removing it on my G10 "carry" smock.
But overall I don't consider myself any less of a person for keeping the 2nd detent in at all.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Polished the button and flamed it gold. Added some black hardware and clip...

Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Thanks man! Really loving this one.
Current Sage rotation... Spoiled for choice really. The Magnacut blacked out liners look great with a CF treatment IMO. Carry the Sage1 the most for some reason.

Excellent rotation. I've been thinking of what would or could be considered a 'ideal EDC' carry knives for rotation within Spyderco's line, and the Rex-121 Sage 5 and either iteration of the Sage 6 absolutely make the shortlist. I have the R121 S5, but don't have the Sage 6 (yet). Probably will happen at some point. We (my son and I) have handled both at the SFO, a few times now, and they are complete EDC wonders.

I have the same Sage rotation, except both my 121 and Magnacut versions have AWT scales and all have Lynch clips. Right now the Sage 6 S90V is getting all the pocket time

Re: Sage 6 first impressions
I received my Sage 6 about a week ago, even though I was thinking I’m winding down in the collecting phase. I was just really curious about the button lock as I have a liner lock Maxamat version of the Sage with a liner lock I never dialed in to. I hate liner locks. I was really ready to pack the Sage 6 back up and send it back be cause of the closing action. I expect all my knives to drop shut and if they don’t , I don’t want them. I really didn’t want to take a brand new knife apart especially because I know how Spyderco is with warranty. Anyway , I threw all that to the wind and pulled that friggin 2nd detect ball and spring out of there, and yeah! I’m happy! It’s now what I expected the knife to be and action matches all my others, and I probably have 20 Spydercos. So bottom line is that I’m glad I didn’t send it back, and if Spyderco voids my warranty for that. well so be it. At least I’m happy with my purchase now. Very nice knife.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Since my initial comments a month ago, I have been mostly carrying the S30V Sage 6, and I could not be happier! For me the action is perfect as-is (and I don't feel many things are perfect these days). The grips look and feel great. There is nothing I would change on the Sage 6!
I was looking for something a little bigger than the Native, and this is it. I still like the Leafjumper, but for me the Sage 6 seems like the best available EDC. If I want to carry a larger knife, it will be the Military/M2 or the original Police design (C07S), or eventually the Military 3 with a button lock, or maybe the Sage 6 XL (with everything about 3/8"-1/2" longer).

Re: Sage 6 first impressions
I picked up the Sage 6 sprint and it's my favorite release from Spyderco in a few years now! I'm really loving this knife. It did take a disassembly to clean it out, and get it running smoothly, but since then... Just wow! Absolute perfect, drop-shut action just like with my Maxamet Sage 5 LW, and my M4 LW. Centering is dead on. The grind is excellent. It's just an all around homerun release for me.

Video of the action after tuning!I also added an RGT Ghost Timascus clip. :)

Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Is that action strictly from cleaning it out or did you remove the 2nd detent? That action looks exactly like mine, but I did remove it. Since I have removed it though it has become one of my favorites. I would be happier to have it just as it came but the close action on mine was horrible with that ball in there. No amount of adjusting the pivot etc helped. If it was just cleaning that did that, I would consider going back that way, though the knife seems perfect to me right now.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
I realize it is a function of the lock mechanism but, does the button not being level when the blade is deployed bother anyone else's OCD?
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
I did remove the second detent, I should have stated that. The action after that was still a little sticky though. After cleaning out the carbon fiber dust, it's super smooth. I'm really loving it. :)Frankie2blue wrote: ↑Wed Jun 18, 2025 6:37 amIs that action strictly from cleaning it out or did you remove the 2nd detent? Re: Sage 6 first impressions
Glad to hear that you removed it. I hate changing anything from factory stock but I could not handle the drop on this the way it was. Glad I didn’t send it back because it is also now becoming one of my favorites and the action opening and closing is spot on perfect.
Re: Sage 6 first impressions
But most importantly, as Sal would say..."how does it cut??"Frankie2blue wrote: ↑Wed Jun 18, 2025 9:36 pmGlad to hear that you removed it.
