Sal, what are the chances for a Calypso jr. in SPY27 ?

#1

Post by elena86 »

This is probably my most loved model from the Caly family. I only hope and pray that the Spyderco crew decides to bring it back in SPY27 and I guess I am not the only one. Fingers crossed 🤞

P.S. A sprint run maybe ? A tiny one 🙏

Hi Marius,

Frankly, not very good. Having issues with delivery from he maker. If things get sorted, we can think about it?

This has been sad to hear about from time to time, the problems at Moki. I'm sure we'd all be happy to see them back on their game, and see the Caly line shine again, even for a sprint or two. All the best to them.

I really like my two Caly 3 and my Caly 3.5. I'd love to have a Caly 3 in a recent steel (I'm thinking Cruwear at the time). So if it will help, I'm adding my voice! Perhaps switching to a different maker will help? How about making them right in Golden?

Moki, I gather, has a role in making the Caly line? I knew that Spyderco knives were made in several places, including Japan, Taiwan, and the U.S. I didn't know abut Moki. I'm guessing that maybe they make some of the parts and ship them to the point of final assembly? Or do they make complete knives? Are they involved in other models?

Moki is the name of a manufacturer in Seki Japan.

They also use a manufacturer in Seki called Sakai.

They are contracted to produce knives for Spyderco, for other knife makers, and they probably produce knives that are sold under their own brand as well. Spyderco does not own or control production facilities in Japan.

I know they do the same thing in Italy, using Fox and other Italian factories.

I'm not sure about China and Taiwan, but I assume it's the same. I believe that the only factory actually owned and controlled by Spyderco is in Golden

Moki has made some of the best finished, best fitted knives through the decades, both under their own name and for Spyderco. Sad to hear they are struggling. I have read here in the forums that its a combo of illness and generation change at the factory, neither is easy to cope with..

Sorry to hear that. The Caly-Calypso family is such a refined line of knives. This probably means that the LW Caly3.5 is also on hold. Such a disappointment 😔

Thanks for explaining all that. I can see that Moki has produced excellent craftsmanship, just from handling and admiring my Caly knives. I wish them well, and hope to see more from them--especially another round of Caly models.
