No picture but today there was a black snake under my truck. I tried to shew it away and that tool decided to climb up under the bed of the truck. By the time I got my flashlight out he had disappeared. I guess I have a pet snake now. I have no idea where he is. I looked for a good 10 minutes. Just vanished in the truck somewhere. I assume he’ll get hungry and leave eventually.

Being the hopeless romantic that I am,
indulge me for a moment
for a story not unlike The Yearling
but with a sentimental ending.

One spring, a girl named Rosa
befriends an orphaned fawn
which grows into an independent doe.

Over the years,
the doe returns each spring
to introduce her fawn to Rosa.

For generations of deer
and every spring for decades,
a doe appears with a fawn.

Finally, on Christmas Eve
at the age of 95
Rosa peacefully passed away.

And every spring since then
a doe and fawn
visit her grave.

This lil’ dude sometimes gets confused with a baby rattler or baby copperhead but it’s just a harmless Dekay’s brownsnake…I’ve run across all three and if I’m with someone they’ll usually say “kill it” then I’ll pick it up and say but why? 😉

A very nice Rose Hooktip.
Oreta rosea, the Rose Hooktip Moth, is a moth in the Drepanidae family. It was described by Walker in 1855. It is found in North America, where it has been recorded across boreal Canada to eastern North America. In the north, the range extends to northern Alberta, northern Manitoba and Newfoundland. It is also found east of the Great Plains as far south as Florida and eastern Texas. The habitat consists of moist temperate hardwood forests. iNaturalist
